Back in Jan 94 i was headed home from work in a snow/sleet storm and I hit some black ice. The rear whipped around and I hit the median on a parkway head on. Thankfully there was a spin out behind me at the same time I spun out and not many cars were behind me. The wagon stalled when it hit the wall. It started right back up when i hit the key a minute or two after impact. The 318 still ran fine but I knew the car was totaled,it got me home but I knew the wagon was done. Thankfully i was not hurt, and was only about 15 minutes from home. The Sport Suburban really took the hit well and I had my seat-belt on I was fine. This was one of my first cars a 1971 Sport Suburban 318 car. I was the second owner, the guy i bought it from had 4 daughters it had 166k on it when it hit the wall. It was never pretty, the interior was very clean and the outside had rust in all the usual places. It was a great car that took me and my friends on many adventures and always got us home. I had lots of fun in my wagon, I still miss it.
Two months before the accident i took three weekend road trips, Long Island to Indiana, then Long Island to Buffalo, and then Long Island to Boston.
In the winter of 94 we had so much snow on Long Island it did not melt till March. When i got to going over my spare 1971 Sport Suburban I found out the frame was rusted. I was not able to put it on the road. I had gotten the spare wagon in 93, it had a bad transmission but the frame rot was too bad. I had 2 identical 1971 Sport Suburbans at the same time, too and I could not make one good car.
After the accident I bought a mint 72 Newport after this wagon that I had for a few months then bought a 71 Town and Country that I had for about 8 years till it rusted out.
I found these pics this weekend while cleaning. Thought they were interesting to post.
