Stupid things I heard at the Car Show last nite

I had a young man almost argue with me at Auto Zone that I gave him the wrong year for my '66 300. He laughed and said you mean '06, No I said just type it in I have the right year.

has something similar happen to me when I had my '72 Ambassador.......i told him (advance counter guy) it was a 360 and he said, i'll look under hte chrysler part listing since amc used the chrysler 360. I told him no they didn't and he told me, "yes they did, my father told me so." I then told him, "your father doesn't know squat about cars", and walked out the door.

at least the napa guys around here are pretty knowledgeable.

I also had my insurance agent (same car, 72 ambassador) spell it Embasitor on my policy declaration page (wish I kept that) right after she argued with me that the VIN was incorrect as it did not have 17 digits (it had 13). she still has my first prize as biggest idiot, in her business she ought to know that. BTW, she is no longer my agent, for reasons stated above.

No, "I had one just like that." ??? That's good from about 1/2 dozen guys who drove their parent's /6 Valiants or whatever..

this is a really fun thread, but this slant 6 Valiant one has got to be the best, its really funny some of the stuff people come up with:eek:ccasion14:

Heard a guy lastnight point to a Buick GS and say to his son, and I quote "They made a higher performance one they called the GTX"

I **** you not....................

Nick

My favorite was a time I was out with my buddy cruising. We stopped at the parts store to grab something..he was driving his EF8 70 Challenger, I had my EW1 73 Roadrunner. Guy walks into the parts store and busts out, "Hey, who's green Cougar is that?" My buddy wanted to turn around a deck the guy....:D

My POV is that there are no dumb questions. Asking a question generally means the person is looking for info and I'll oblige if I know. It's only when the person starts by making absurd claims ie. "68 Monaco's didn't come with 440s" that I get POd.

Yeah, I think that was just a slip up as we all do at our age. He gets a pass.......

Well, they made GSX so he was not far from it...

Yeah close but he then took his son overt to a Challenger and talked about how fast those Oldsmobiles were "especially these 383 powered R/T 442's, your cousin had one"

Need I say more, my friend John and I where having a hard time not dying of laughter

I have gotten the that's anice camaro in my challenger my son fixed that one, he was 8 at time told the guy it was not a Chevy. My wife at a gas station standing next to car guy told her nice charger at least he was in right company and division. The best comment I ever got was on Oh. Pike at gas pumps guy in a porchse, one of the good ones, looks at my car tells me that was one of the nicest and best looking cars he ever owned, I was proud.

Misidentification doesn't cause me much grief if the intended compliment was genuine. Just correct the person and say thanks. These are mostly people that just like old cars but are not in the hobby. It's the backhanders from the A, B & E Body guys that get me going. "That must be a handful to drive." "Not if you know how to drive."

Right Fred, doesn't bother me that much either, we have quite some meets over here which are in connection with some locally related festivities in town which draw many car unrelated people who just want to "stroll down memory lane" , by that you get used to it over the time.

I didn't know they made 300's back then..

Should have schooled them Wil,lol.

I heard that again at a cruise in last night.....
I normally go into a disertation about the history of the Chrysler 300 and folks seem to be very appreciative and happy to receive the information.

It's easy for us, (espically us ole guys), to forget that not everyone is as well versed in automotive lore as we are. Most spectators come to a show with their wife and/or kid and get swept up in the wave of nostelga these old cars bring out. So what if they don't recall with exact clarity every detail of their uncles car from 50 years ago. And a guy trying to impress his kid confusing a GTX with a GTS sounds normal to me.

I'm always happy to set the record straight if someone wants to listen.... Most will nod their head.... say "I didn't know that", smile and say thank you, thats a beautiful car.... Then go on to missidentify another car.
