Talk to Me about Heat Risers

So anybody know which direction is closed? Mine is rotated all the way clockwise (from the front, or counterweight side). I think gravity pulls it this way if the spring is broken.

Doesn't matter if there is no spring and it still moves freely. Once the engine turns over it flips open anyway.

I was having hot start issues if you all remember and it went away when I replaced my worn fuel pump pushrod, along with several other issues. Just thought it might be something to check while your at it.

I was having hot start issues and my heat crossovers are blocked. I had ignition and fuel supply problems I finally got it all sorted out last fall. Will see how it acts at Carlisle this year

Where/how was it worn, and did it lessen the pump action when hot?
It was literally worn over a quarter inch shorter from wear and it was making me think I was having issues from heat. Maybe I was but it was because the pump couldn't refill the bowls sufficiently.

My problems were from a restriction on main fuel line under the car, pin hole in the pick up tube in tank would suck just enough air when below 2/3 tank. After I got all that sorted out still would not rev past 4500 rpm turned out to be the ground on the ECU, the car starts much better now, and is more consistent ie. number of cranks then starts. Before it was all over the place.

Damn, that's a lot! And a good chunk of the pump arm's travel. Are your lifters ok?

Changed the fuel filter last night. Had some rusty gas in there. F. We'll see how she starts after this. Now I gotta probably pull the tank...

I was getting rusty crap in my filter also, so if you pull your tank make sure line under car is clear.

You're correct...it probably ain't! Will have to blow it out with compressed air/gumout carb cleaner.
I can take the gas tank and radiator in at the same time to be redone - got a good rad shop here nearby.

New cam and lifters and I use good oil. I didn't inspect the rod when I did the top end.
