First time that dad got to buy a big car too. I was 17 and had a 66 Belvedere II with the poly teen at the time. Dad was a Mopar guy but didn't work on them and tried a little to encourage me to make enough money to not have too work on my own cars but wasn't having anything to do with that mess as I was crazy about cars starting at a pretty young age. Anyways, dad let me take the Yorker out for a spin and much to my surprise, he let me take it WITHOUT him being with me! Never thought a huge car like that could be that fast!!
Took it out on this lonely 2 lane blacktop (heck, ALL the roads out here were two lane blacktops back then) and dropped the throttle and wow. Looked in the mirror and saw smoke and then saw two black tracks and thought wow, a posi (never heard the term Sure Grip back then either) and then saw only one black track and that seemed like it went on forever. Well, it went for over 200 feet. The sound of the 440 was music to my ears.
And well, the 440 was the only good thing about that car. Dad said it was the only lemon he ever got and traded it in on a 70 Monaco after less than a years time. Some of the things wrong....starting with the small stuff....power antenna wouldn't go down once up, power windows wouldn't go up once down, the radio always had static on it, HVAC system wouldn't work very well and the rear seat never got any air. Now for the big stuff....rear end ate bearings and quickly and the transmission took a dump and all this stuff happened BEFORE I got to drive it.
I think he let me drive it by myself because he knew he was about to trade it in since it wasn't long after that it was gone and the Monaco was in the driveway. The Monaco was loaded up pretty good with a 383 4 barrel and it too ran well but not like the barge did. He never let me drive that one by myself though lol. He liked it but was doing very well in business and bought a new 71 Monaco...same color and interior combo as the 70. In the mid 70's I bought a 69 Fury mordoor with a 383 but it was a 250 dollar beater and I beat on it some more.
