Took a cool pic?

Not taken by me, but by one of our group of airplane spotters. Pretty wild crosswind landing by KLM last week...

Neat pic.

TANGENT ALERT

Hey, any pilots here?

i am sure I have been on on/some type of these landings. Safe but a little unsettling (and I am a 10M mile FF in nearly 40 years)

Usually, you feel the "yawing" (plane is wiggling) when you're coming in - assming they have decided to try to safely land with whatever straight crosses/gusts they are facing

Pilots are trained/planes designed to land in cross-winds up to a limit of course ... i wonder with this particular one, does s/he keep right wheel up a bit longer, tweak rudder a tad to move nose left , then quickly set down on both gears

Or

The port yaw is NOT so bad, s/he can just put it down, then "steer" it a tad while its rolling/stopping?

Or

Is the rest of the story above a "abort/go around"?

I was on a plane landing that day, Mar 9, but our plane didn't make the video.
Here's the full video from that day. KLM is a t 7:33.

Wow, they got it down.

On two legs, askance for whatever (140[?] MPH for two seconds is) time its moving diagonally, slowing down the whole while simply cuz its on the ground, dropped the nose rather quickly (maybe they were differentiallly braking during the roll, to liine it up, slighltly turned steer wheel to starboard giving it a chance rto roll vs. "stick" the landing and snap gear off/), then STEERED/braked out of it?

Anyway, that's what it looked like to me (more pronounced on the jets vs. the props).:)

I was on a flight into Portland that was like this, quite a different feeling when you can look down the runway from a passenger seat.

I have been on a couple of flights in a DC-10 and a 727, where the ceiling tiles and oxygen masks dropped. We gave the retired Marine and Navy pilots a 2.3 out of 10. (both aircraft were testbeds and were flown by company pilots…

Learned something everyday. 10 min. vid below - pilots earning their pay for the day in crosswinds.

The "crab-leg" landing.

Watching some of these, now that I know what they sometimes do to land in cross-winds, I have "felt" that motion IN the plane more often than I knew what they did.

Routine .. til it aint. I will put the video here in Heavy Metal

Finally went to where my science-fiction hero fought the Gorn in 1967. Vasquez Rocks.

same place, three days ago. I dIdn't quite get the same angle .. but that's it.

This is actually a parking lot, and the way in is in the center of the pic. You can even see tire tracks (blooper) in the Star Trek still pic .. and that tree is a prop, supposedly on a planet 100 LY from Earth.

When did you go there? you still in the area? How long? other plans?

Was there from last Tuesday to yesterday. Brother in Temecula, daughter in Santa Monica, daughter in Palmdale. See my grand kiddies too.

Havent been to SoCal in a few years, and maybe its just because I am getting older, but man, I have my reservations about driving there. Up/down I-5, 405, 10 East/West .. I was struck by the skid marks from left to right.

Like somebody deciding, at last minute, going 80 mph, to exit.

Then, i saw it happen, a dozen times. Second lane from right, I was doing 70 .. and getting passed on all sides. By trucks yet. And then, some kamikaze breaks outta the HOV lane(where its possible), in a diagonal drift, to exit.

Anyway (is it allowed?) do motorcyles get to occupy same lane as cars. 5 days, 800 miles, and I needed nerve meds when I got back :poke:

Other stuff

Oh, got to do the Petersen. Cool joint,

Lane splitting is legal in California not by definition but that is isn't explicitly restricted.
For years there has been an understanding but over the years it has gotten out of hand.
Recently the CHP was asked to look into it to see if there needs to be something more official, I haven't heard of anything yet.

I think the rule is that motorcycles must lane-split between the #1 and #2 lane, if more than two lanes. The good thing about Harleys is that you can hear them coming and move over in time. The BMWs and other more 'refined' bikes are silent on approach and cars don't know they're coming thus fail to give space. That leads to mirror clipping, and in some cases, biker retaliation in various forms.
I have always thought that it would be better, and safer to let the bikers ride on the left shoulder instead of lane splittin... more room. Just watch out for debris.

Again a rule, understanding, common practice, nothing enforceable.
The understanding was that traffic had to be slower than the speed limit, typically 10-15 under.

If the riders are within the "rule" it is generally seen as safer than sitting in traffic. Also when most bikes were air cooled it just wasn't a good idea to be sitting still or idling along.

one more, then I will get down off my high horse.

whatever the rules/customs/wherever, I saw motorcycle riders (at least they were wearing helmets)..

1. lane splitting at ALL speeds on the freeways. 50mph to, eyeballing it by my speed, +80 mph
2. "basket weaving", alone and as if racing in bunches, in and out of traffic at all speeds.
3. In my vehicle "blind spot" (behind "C" pillar), in my lane, cuz I could hear 'em "buzzing" but was having trouble seeing them. My fear for me and them -- having to make an evasive lane manaeuver (debris, collision avoidance, etc.) at a speed that caused them to fall, hit me/others, etc.

I am not/never been a "biker". Doing highway speed, without a metal cocoon around me, has always bugged me. I wouldn't let my girls ride with boys/girls on motorcycles either.

in/around vehicles two/more tons, doing 50/more mph, has inherent risks. I just want people to be safe out there.

Looking out the window, flying from John Wayne (Santa Ana) to Denver.

Dunno my SoCal geography well enough, but pilot left John Wayne toward the west (she announced she would power down after takeoff for noise abatement, so passengers should not get alarmed), powered up a bit over the Pacific, then made right "U-turn" and headed ENE.

Beautiful, clear day on the whole trip to Denver. Did manage to get some pics of things I thought I recognized from announced altitude of 39,000 feet.

Las Vegas -- flew right over it. Widest shot you clearly see the (Harry Reid) airport/city, on city closeup, you can see several LV landmarks (hotels, arenas, etc.).

Then below, I think this is part of Lake Mead.

Below, this is outside (to the west) of Denver, and I think Mt Blue Sky. I was looking for Pike's Peak ... which I recognize from the ground .. but could not do so from the air (may have been on the wrong side of the plane).
