I'm redoing my front end on 67 chrysler newport. I had to turn adjusting bolt clockwise on both sides to release the tension.
can this happen or did someone screw up my torsion bars?
thanks!

The tensioners should turn counter clockwise to release, the torsion bars can be installed backwards by putting the left on the right side, etc. Get a flash light and check the rear end of the bar, the left and right side are numbered differently. RH torsion bars have even numbers, LH have odd numbers. If the were installed incorrectly, do not reuse them.

Mixing up the left - right torsion bars would not change the rotation direction of the adjusting bolt. The bolts are screwed "up" (clock-wise as seen from under the bolts) to load the bars. If the adjusting bar-nut is mounted upside down in the lower control arm slot, that might be the reason for the reverse direction being seen here.
