Changing out the torsion bars on my '65 Polara. Using the police car/HD 1.06'' ones from firm feel. I ordered the new seals as well, but I have having hell fully removing the old bars and seals. Is there a trick to this? A trick to installing the new bars/seals? Everything on this car seems to be cemented in place. I am fully rebuilding the front suspension.

I assume you've released the tension. Have you taken the clip out of the anchor too?

You will probably need a tool like this (this is from Mancini) and a hammer to remove the bars.

I have released the tension and the clip is out of the anchor. I slid them back and the entire front suspension is off of the car. I am trying to slide them back forward and remove the old seals so that I can slide in the new ones from the front.

Just redid my suspension and used this very same tool. Tortion bar removal was a piece of cake! A must have tool indeed!

First if you don't have a torsion bar removal tool you can find one on e-bay or Mancini racing, etc. it will make life a lot simpler. You need to take the load off the torsion bars by backing off the bolt in the lower control arm. There is a spring clip at the rear of the torsion bar that needs to be removed, attach the removal tool to the bar, use a hammer on the tool to drive the bar out the back.

So I can't remove them towards the front of the car? I have completed all of the other steps. Guess that means I will have to remove my exhaust if they have to come out the back.

I was going to say to knock them out the back, but it sounds like you can't easily.

Clean everything up and hit the hex with a file to remove any burrs.

Another thought? Are you saving the old bars? Cut them off with a torch.... Just stay near the end... They make great pry bars.

Great idea!! I am not saving the bars. I desperately need to invest in a torch. Boy would that have solved a world of problems already.

I'm not totally sure on this, but I don't believe the bars will come out the front. Sorry for the non answer, but it's been soooo many years since I had one out I just don't 'member. That said, if I'm right, you still have to mess with the exhaust to put the new ones in. (Just a thought)

No point in cutting them to remove if the exhaust is in the way, it will still be in the way when installing the new ones.

They can't come out the front due to the rods are locked into the lower control arms - they need to exit from the rear.

I'm still not sure that once you slide the bars back then remove the control arm that there will be room to slide the bars out the front.

Alan

I can't answer that, I would assume the room needed would be obvious and I have never tried to take remove them out the front.

I was able to get them out the front after all. Everything almost back together now. Putting the brakes back together this week. Thanks for all of your help

I had a machinist that used to work for GE make me a tool for removing torsion bars. It's basically the same as that just a little beefier. I have for worries when it comes to whacking it to knock the bars loose.
