Trans cross member have to come out to replace mount 57 Belvedere ?

Is this suspected of causing the highway speed vibration?

Just curious,

If the desired angularity might become greater than what it is designed to be, then a shudder on acceleration can occur. Mainly on acceleration, though.

The front u-joint is more prone to wear than the rear u-joint seems to be, which can result in highway speed vibrations. In the case of our '66 Newport, I started to hear squeaks on take-off from a red light, but would vanish at higher road speeds, when a higher-frequency vibration could be felt when I'd put my right arm on top of the front seat back while cruising down the highway. Vibrations had been there a while when the squeaks started.

I pulled off the wheel covers, but the squeaks still happened. One trip around the lot at the Chrysler dealer and the diagnosis was the front u-joint, which we always kept greased. Replaced it and the highway vibrations and squeaks ended. "Like new" again!

The front U-joint is ball and trunnion style different than the cross style U-joint.
Still requires periodic greasing but you need to remove driveshaft and remove the metal cover to access the cross shaft and two rollers.

Don't remember if by raising the transmission will give enough clearance to replace the transmission mount but removing the transmission cross member is easy and the torsion bar mounts do not get touched although by looking at it it would seem you have to deal with the torsion bar mounts but you don't.

You're right, the torsion bars look like they're attached! However, I was able to raise the trans to get to the bolts but don't know if I can get the new one in because the old one came out in rubber pieces, completely disintegrated. Anyone one know of a cheaper new mount other that $75. shipped? The other style for theses cars is like $8.! Mine is a wide bracket.

I have replaced them by just lifting the tranny up a bit. They were all torqueflites behind V8s. If you need to drop the crossmember it is not hard to do.
