Photo above is of an old transmission filter (on right) that I just took out of my 68 Dodge Monaco 500 (383 2 barrel) and on the left is a clean/larger (transmission kit) filter that I had sitting on my shelf.

The clean/larger filter is from a transmission kit that I bought for my 69-70 Fury several years ago but did not use. This kit also has two gaskets in it...one of which perfectly matches the pan on my Monaco 500. The filter has three mounting screw holes that match up perfectly and I do believe there is nothing in the way inside the transmission/pan for the larger/extra portion of the new filter. But obviously, the filter is lacking one trans. fluid flow hole.

Question: Could I carefully cut a hole in the new filter to match the location of the hole in the old filter and use this transmission kit...or would it just be a risk in causing a problem later on?

Thanks guys. I'll call around today and see what I can find at the local parts stores. There's an Auto Zone close by. I hope I don't have to order on e-bay. I want to get it done...if you know what I mean. May is already 1/2 over. It's good to know what the difference is too; 904 vs 727

I thank you all again...
Bob

The two hole is a left over from days with the rear pump chances are the new one will be single hole

Thank you 70bigblockdodge...I went to Auto Zone today and then to NAPA too...Both parts guys said there's only one filter/gasket kit listed for 68 Dodge Monaco. Both searched additional years, motors, other Mopar makes too. This is the only kit listed for all: TF127. This kit includes (2 different shaped) gaskets and the larger filter with only one hole. Exactly like the photo of the filter that's above in my first post.

My concern was that the flow of trans. fluid will be choked off with the "one hole" filter no? Can you explain more on this? " the two hole is left over from days with the rear pump". So for sure it's ok to install this one hole filter?

Thanks, Bob

early 727's had 2 pumps, front and rear, later 727's only have the front pump. just read that they switched in 1966 so you should be ok using that filter in your 68

Thank you...Ok...so if the parts guy would have searched 1965 he probably would have found the filter I had in there (with the two holes). Anyways..the new filter (1 hole) is installed now...and working fine. Thank you for this update. It's good to know!
