i tried searching the site, but my search-fu isn't the greatest

what is the best way to improve the lighting in the trunk...
the single bulb is just not cutting it for me back there. after i figured out wtf was wrong with my courtesy lights and cigar lighter, it was a unsoldered fuse :-\ glad it was an easy fix on that...

anyways i'm planing on upgrading those bulbs to LEDs

I plan to add strip LED lighting along the length of the trunk deck on both sides and wire it in parallel to the trunk light circuit. the added draw should be next to nothing after I replace the stock 1004 bulb with an LED one as well

kind of hoping to just rewire the base of the bulb for the led lighting so i can still use the same circuit w/o cutting and or splicing the harness

that is correct, you can certainly do this as well. I have not purchased the strips yet but there are a tone of suppliers on EBay or Amazon or simply google LED light strips and go with anything from Japan.
Unfortunately US sellers really hit us for a huge mark up

Here's a good example...
Shop 12v-waterproof-led-strip-lights online Gallery - Buy 12v-waterproof-led-strip-lights for unbeatable low prices on AliExpress.com

I've purchased from the www.Superledlights.com before and had a very good product but in some cases the price has really jumped over time.
Here is what I plan to get for the trunk.
Outdoor LED Light Strips with Switch - LED Truck Bed Lights with 18 SMDs/ft. - 1 Chip SMD LED 3528 | Top Emitting LED Strip Lights | LED Strip Lights - Single Color | LED Strip Lights & LED Bars | Super Bright LEDs

many of the higher priced LED companies warn against the cheap competition but at the end ofthe day it's your $$$'s .
You just have to make the decision on how bright you want the trunk to be..

i still have plenty of time to figure all this out
