1987 Plymouth Other | eBay

Only on the surface is this your average Reliant K. For sale is a performant, resto-moded sleeper with classic station wagon aesthetics and utility. Shock your sports car friends with its performance while attracting zero attention on public roads.

The car came with sway bars and polyurethane bushings already installed; combined with a low weight from the factory, the car was satisfying. Despite this, the opportunity to enhance the car's performance in every respect with superior donor components has never been passed up.

Installed:

- low mile turbocharged 1988 LeBaron Intercooled GTS drivetrain (175 hp) <- oem 2.5 (~85 hp)

- adequate fuel pump

- Custom mandrilled exhaust (and then custom-fitted to this car) with cat section

- Shelby Daytona computer <- oem computer

- LeBaron knuckles installed up front <- oem knuckles

- Rear brakes disks <- oem drums

- 11.5" drilled slotted rotors all around

- re-cored copper-frame radiator

- LeBaron sport "wire" wheels

- fresh fuel tank

- Lower control arm polyurethane bushings

- Stiffer front springs

- new Montroe front struts

- rear koni shocks

Included, not installed:

- external oil cooler

- external oil cooler adapter plate

- plumbing

The car WILL PASS smog.

I love it! I had an 87 Lebaron wagon with a 2.2 Turbo that shocked a few people in the mid nineties. Those intercooled turbos really make a car move.

That would make a interesting daily driver, I would want to turn up the wick though and make some more power.

66 bids already and one jacka.. started the bidding at $2 and pretty much bid one to two dollars bringing it all the way up to $67 on 45 bids.

Looks to be a turbo1 converted to a turbo II. It is now intercooled. Sorta the same set up as my 86 Omni Glhs stock. Has an aftermarket fan. Stock Daytona SMEC computer which will read to 14.7 psi of boost with a 2 atmosphere map sensor. Intake is a one piece turbo II I believe with a stock 48mm throttle body. You could turn up the wick for more boost but unless you put in a 3 atmosphere map sensor and a computer to manage it with a modified calibration you are guessing. If you try with the stock computer a wide band AF monitor and a adjustable fuel pressure regulator would be a must and you remove the boost control away from the computer and run a manual boost controler and monitor AF and read codes from your snap on scanner for knock retard info while running it. Exhaust temp gauge on cylinder 4 would be advisable too.
Too bad the LeBaron wasn't a 5 speed they put in the station wagon. These had Getrag [Porsche uses them and made in Germany] gear sets in them and were good to over 400 hp reliably. I had to put one of these in my omni because as modified the stock tranny did not stand a chance and was mandatory if you didn'y want to pull it often and repair it.
As it sits the little wagon could be quite reliable with it's setup at least on paper..
There was a reason they limited these turbo engines to 175 hp. It was the stock transmission only. I speak of the standard tranny's . I know nothing about auto trans of this era. But since they are both the same rated hp I would guess so.
cool car though.

It appears to be a turbo 1 ,non intercooled like the station wagon was before.

Just did my homework. It looks like the hottest factory K-car setup was the 2.2 T4?

If I remember correctly that was a 4 valve per cylinder. I am only familiar with 8 valve . But yes you are correct.

Consulier used the intercooled “Turbo II” version of the 2.2 liter engine powering K-cars, minivans, and Daytonas; in stock trim, it put out 174 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, but Consuliers used for racing were tweaked for higher output. The company quoted 195 on its Web shistory page and “approximately 200 hp” in its press release; though on a specifications brochure, they stated just 174 horsepower, with a maximum boost of 12 psi.
