Ultra-rare 1969 Polara 500 383 4-speed Convertible Left to Decay

Here's a shot of the hood reskin. Somehow Hurst did a pretty good job with this "backyard/shade tree" kind of mod!

Here's a shot of all work completed, latch in proper phosphate (Eastwood), new hood pad. But what are those eight holes in the steel portion for?

Nope. Unlike the reskin of the hood, the deck lid is all fiberglass. Which is why the poor things warped like crazy by 1972. I'm happy that mine is only slightly warped at the right front corner. Rest of it is quite good.

As you can see, the innards of the decklid are 'glass.

It's kinda cool how the underside kinda "looks" like the steel ribbing.

I wonder why they didn't do a reskin on the trunk lid, perhaps it would've needed significant reworking due to the downward slope to incorporate the spoiler?

And I have to ask, given how correct your car is, did the Hurst's come with the iron cross style lug wrench?

Always the ball buster. keep at it.

I'm thinking they used their artistic liberty to make this one of those 1.5% four speed cars, instead of saying it was a conversion. To the uneducated, it's a cool little story. To us, we pick it apart completely. Just looking at that awesome hump with patches where they don't belong, cruise control, etc.

I agree 100% that fender tag has (had) a 5 on it. But where's the fun in that story?

Interesting observation! I'm sure you're correct about the spoiler "downward slope" vs the OEM steel support. And note the Q-panel endcaps are also 'glass.

Good eye on the lug wrench! It's a genuine.....2019... .item from O'Reilly. Passenger side lugnuts are a different size from the left-hand thread Driver's side, and I have absolutely no idea why. Thus the cross-wrench with the necessary sizes should I ever really have to put that 25 year old spare to use.

So the trunk isn't a reskin?
No, it's all fiberglass, with a steel insert at the hinge for the bolts.

The decklid is super lightweight. Springs at set at the minimum preload holes.

The light, which would have normally been up near the lock assy, was mounted to the left side hinge and slightly bent [to more of an L shape instead of the V shape] so as to go out when the trunk was closed. My original one was all screwed up, so I found this NOS item (2947286) and now it works perfectly....even if it DOES shine in your eyes at night. More backyard engineering!

Here's what the bracket would look like before it was "field adjusted" by Hurst. More V at the bend, and wouldn't have gone out when mounted on the hinge, with the trunk closed (mercury switch, of course).

Hahahahahaaaaa....that's hilarious! Yes indeed, I love to show off my bowling ball bag. Ownership is all the more sweet because I negotiated with Tim Wellborn to to buy a different one and stop upping my bids to totally unreasonable levels. That offsets the heartbreak of not winning Miss Hurst, which went for something like $6K.

Tim Wellborn story:

I'm sitting next to him at Mecum Indy 2020 at the Road Art auction while he was bidding on stuff for his museum. We both took a shot at Miss Hurst. I stopped at $500, he started at 1000, stopped at $1500. Meanwhile, the bowling bag and many other Steve Juliano items were being auctioned via the On-Time web system that was closing at 4 that afternoon. I had started the bid weeks earlier at $5, and it stayed here until Indy. My phone dings and the bid is up to $20. I hit back for $100, and Tim's phone dings but I didn't think anything about it. He fiddles with his phone and now I get a ding for $200, but I'm not realizing all this just yet. I hit for $250, he dings and fiddles and now it's $300. I have an inkling, ding back to $400, watch his phone, see him looking annoyed.....so I say "Tim, are you bidding on some damn bowling bag?" He says "Yeah, some jerk just raised it to $400!"

I convinced him to go for the OTHER bowling bag in slightly less-nice condition with almost no bids, and being the outstanding gentleman that he is, we're both proud owners. Earlier in the day, he has scored a fabulous Chrysler wri$$$twatch, some cufflinks, and some cool jewelry for his wife. And plenty of Mopar road art stuff for the museum, particularly "danglers".

Did I mention that Tim Wellborn is an outstanding gentleman? He's my hero for sure!

Hard to tell from the pic but is the hood pad molded like the original? If so do you know if Eastwood still carries it?

Uhhhhhh......I don't know, as I'm clueless about any molded OEM pad. It's the pad that Murray P and many others sell (probably DetroitMuscleTech is the mfg, dunno), and I can't say that it needs to be molded, since it goes on a totally flat area. Because you asked, you probably know more than me re "molded". Having said that, I'm quite aware that many Mopar hood pads are dramatically shaped to fit the underhood. In the case of my 70 300, I'm quite happy with it. That fiberglass hood needs some heat protection!
