Under hood insulation

By the middle 1960s, the insulators were also stamped to match the inner structure of the hood panel itself. That, too, kind of answers the question, too.
 
Thank you for your response. I am now confident in ensuring proper assembly, which I believe is part of the purpose of this site. I have had to scrape the insulation off of a hood or two in the past.

While that's true, a lot of the aftermarket pads aren't molded like the OEM, so that's really not answering the question.

I see your question as being pretty reasonable. No one is born knowing everything and you are correct that part of the purpose of the site is to help with "proper assembly".

To answer the question, the fiberglass is towards the engine and the backing towards the hood.
