My '67 300 has issues with both vent window regulators. when you rotate the handle the handle starts to extend away from the door and the the vent window doesn't move. You can rotate the window by hand at this point but the regulator doesn't move the window. Can these be rebuilt? If they need to be replaced are they year and model specific or even make specific?

There is a retainer gone from the shaft, so the shaft comes out of the housing instead of rotating the glass. If you take it apart and look it over you, should see where this retainer is missing and install one.

Most of these cars do this, so chances are you buy another unit it will be the same or start soon. Lubrication may help quite a bit here before they are broken. Surely some were used all the time and others never used.

Both of mine do the EXACT same thing on my 68 Newport, but I haven't asked for tips yet, since I have so many irons in the fire already.

It is possible that the ball-joint came apart, it is crimped together.

There is also a chance it is an internal issue.

I have found that the rear plate that is riveted on tends to get pushed off allowing this. I'm going to try drilling and tapping screws into mine to hold the plate on and see if that helps.

The ball-joint is attached to the vent shaft. The vent shaft has a couple nubs on it that hold tiny blocks (2) with a hole in it, the blocks are about 1/4"x1/2"x3/32". The ball has a pocket/channel that these bars slide into, the channel is then punched to keep the assembly together.

Mine opens, but I have to close it by hand. I can turn the crank in the close direction, and it eventually stops... I just need to dig in and see what it all looks like inside.

i can crank open my vent windows with my pinky

I concur.

I found the missing cover inside the door. Cleaned and lubed the whole thing, then re-installed and re-crimped the cover.

Works fine now.

Hope the input helps.

Yup - a little pictorial tutorial would be helpful! Lots of good info above though - I have a number of these little regulators stashed away and I need to improve the ones currently on the wagon. At some point though, it gets power vents!

Yea now memory is coming back as I had a few go bad back in the 70's when they weren't that old.
IIRC the vent window shaft would get tight:

via corrosion and even though there was plenty of lube on the worm & gear and it was clean the cranking force would push the crimped on cap off.

The fix would be clean the shaft and clean & re-lube and re-crimp the cap/disk. Fairly simple, don't know how well this will go for 50 year old "Barn Finds".

(edit) this is the best pic I could find of the 'disk' that pushes out of the crimped housing.
