What are you working on today??

Excellent job! If you ever want to work as a carpenter, I have a job for you ( here in Finland :D..)!!
My grandfather (my dad’s dad) was a carpenter. We had recently visited my aunt (dad’s sister) and she had asked me about what carpentry work that I had been working on (knowing that we had had a lot of remodeling work done and nearing completion). Needless to say that she was pleased when I had shared some pictures.

I certainly won’t be going into the carpentry business, as auto mechanics. I think that working in these areas as a hobby is why it’s so enjoyable. I don’t have to do the work….

I’m also grateful that I have some talent and haven’t lost fingers, arm or worse…

I have spent a few evenings working on this car.

71 charger in Gun Metal Grey / Winchester Gray
318 auto.
This car hit an elk in 1980. Went through the window and broke the passengers side of the front seat. It was owned by a family that has multiple mopars that I have tried to buy any mopar from the family for years. This was the grandpa's car. In 82 he sold it to a fella that set it up on his property at about 8500 elevation. The car sat until 2024. My buddy sold it to me, well, sold it to a friend of mine. Then he backed out when it was at my property and I already paid for it for him. So I got a 71 charger. My first car from the Kinyon family, although through someone else and 20 years of trying.
Changed the fluids, changed the plug wires and plugs.
This baby starts up, drives around the block and doesn't smoke.
42 years it sat. Some years under 5-7 foot of snow.
Very little mouse crap in the car. There had been a rabbit that chewed on the plug wires (typical).
I have a brake leak that actively leaks the rear reservoir out after a little while. And I need to do something about the gas tank. Drain it? It sat for 42 years. Not sure there is anything to drain. Probably a clean up.
Unfortunately, this car came from the great lakes area as the story goes. So there is some weird rust.
Since it sat for 42 years with the window busted out the real rust is the two front floor boards and the drivers side frame rail might have issues greater than surface rust.
Rust on the B pillars due to the vinyl top and the cars origins.

Ah, I'm rambling about the car.

About done with a shelf that I made out of 9 scraps left over from the bookcase. It’s replacing a crappy plywood piece that goes in one of the kitchen cabinets.

I also decided to make a first pass of stain to the bookcase.

I’m leaving some of the natural ‘features’ in the facia as it’s from trees on our acreage.
I have a lot of sanding to do, but I am very pleased…

Rebuilt my alternator. Allen diagnostic machine alerted me to the issue of a shorted diode. First picture shows the bad pattern which had a dramatic dip when it went to the bad diode. Soldered in new diodes, bearings and brushes. I wasn’t really seeing any negative effects of it, but likely would have been an issue with extended night driving.

Pulled a 440 and 727.

I partially tore it down first so I could pull it without removing the hood and to make it easier to manage on a sideways incline. I set up a somewhat level platform for the hoist. It started raining so I had to quickly cover the headless block.

Will be pulling and cleaning the injector pre-chambers on this 85 diesel 300D.
After driving the car a few thousand miles, I've come to the conclusion that it is worth a little love. It weighs 3100 pounds.
It's a true snail around town, but once it's spun up to 80 mph it's a lot better drive than my 75-Dodge Dart.

Pull the injectors and have them rebuilt at a Bosch shop.

They all pop good at exactly 2100 pounds. Nice pattern.
All the injection pump elements are also popping all the injectors on the test lines.
New delivery valves and seals did help.
Glow plugs are a-glowing.
Two of the injectors are heating up slow, I want to see them injector chambers you know.

After a LOT of sanding, I got the bookcase stained.
I have one small piece to put behind the cookbook cabinet facia on one side, and then clear coat it, put in the hidden hinges and then I believe that it’s time for installation.
It’s really nice to work with the walnut because it doesn’t lift when it’s stained.

With all the crafts and hobbies you have going on you most be retired! Book shelfs do look great!
I retired on October 1, 2017 (first day that I could). It has been a total blessing!

I put a LOT of things on hold while I was working (1 hour commute @5am to LAX, 1:45 on a good day for the drive home)…

I turned 63 this passed feb, got 3 years 11 months to go! Unless I hit the lottery! I cant wait, got 7 acres to take care of and wife and traveling!

Prepare for the ride of a lifetime!
Travel while you can.
My wife, her oldest brother and his wife are heading to Scotland this year and we are staying in a castle for some of the trip!
