My rear axle tube apparently has a small crack along one of the factory welds, I'm sure it can be repaired but if not and I'm into it for a new axle housing are there any slightly more modern or more easily acquired vehicles where the housing would fit a 1973 Polara? I am not really versed in Mopar and its cross-generational compatibilities, might be wishful thinking but are there any for example truck axles like a Dakota or anything that I might be able to Pick-n-Pull that would also work, or do I need specifically something from that era and a Cbody chassis?

If not welded, perhaps some epoxy sealer like J-B Weld on a completely cleaned and dressed area?

Without any more information I'd say just weld it up and be sure to complete disassemble it - don't leave the pumpkin in or any bearings or they may be damaged by errant sparks as the electricity makes its way back the ground clamp. Test the rest of the housing for any cracks and repair those while at it....

Nothings going to be EXACTLY the same, except other C-bodies, like yours. I have one I'm saving for a rainy day, and I'll bet you could find one in your area as well.
If i were you tho, I'd just fix up the one you've got. You are never gonna break that housing....most shops would just fix it and put it right back in service anyway.

I also have a small leak coming from the selector shaft seal which will.be done at a transmission shop so at that time I will have them fully suss out this housing issue, it's good to hear most believe it's repairable!

A modern RAM 2500 rear end might replace that SUPERB 8.75" rear end. I advise welding the crack, and welding some steel tubing around the axle for added strength. A Dakota rear end won't do. Find a Dana ~ 9.25" rear end, or, a Ford 9".

By FAR the BEST replacement for a Mopar 8 3/4" rear end is another one. Don't **** around with something that good. Seriously, use nothing else smaller than 9" if its anything else. MANY folks with modern vehicles have installed the Mopar 8.75". Its just that damned good.

A 360 in a 73 polara could have come with a 8 1/4.
The subsitute for a 8.25 or a 8 3/4 is the same.
73 through 76 b body wagon for the 8.25, and 71-73 b wagon for the 8 3/4.
Of which I have 1 of each.
Your in victoria, I'm south in Wa.
Modifing a truck housing will require welding spring pads.
Ford truck and later dodge have the wrong bolt pattern.
