What is the function of this spring in a bucket seat

What is the function of this cylinder with a spring in it, in the bucket seat on the passengers site of an imperial 1971 2 door.

It has a lever, when you pull it apparently nothing happens?

Can somebody enlighten me?

Looks like it might be a mis-placed/hidden rh seat recliner spring mechanism? The actual recliner pivot mechanism would be at the base of the seat back, with the spring mechanism giving it the motion so it didn't flop backward uncontrollably when the recliner was adjusted.

Obviously, it's probably been there from Day 1?

Just some thoughts,

From my '70 FSM (I don't have a digital '71). This should be close enough, but look in your '71 Factory Service Manual for more.
