That is the most common for me. Not counting car shows, in 4 years of ownership I have had 2 people actually identify the correct model and year. One actually had one and the other guy's dad had one.

Funny thread! I never thought of posting this before but apparently the situation has happened to most if not all of us.
One of the most interesting time happened a few years ago when the Fiat/Chrysler "merger" was in progress. I was stopped for gas and an Italian looking guy was paying for his has; he saw my car and said; "This is a Chrysler 300!!??" I said that it was a 67 300. He had no clue. He told me he was an engineer from Fiat and was over here to do some research for Fiat. I ended up having to tell him the whole history of the Chrysler 300.
Pretty interesting.

I had several people mistake the 62 Studebaker Lark I had for a Mercedes. I'll give them that one, they look pretty similar and most people now a days have never heard of studebaker

Having possibly the only 1973 Polara in the 5 Bay Area Counties, at a minimum, means that no one is likely to know what it is.
Heck, I fit that. When a Cougar Club member drove to our yearly picnic in 2009 he was in his International Orange Air Resource Board Car clone. Those were 1973 Polara 4 dr sedans as it came down the road we all went what is that. After taking a close look I said I want one of those and knew they wouldn't cost much. The big key was finding even one in the Bay Area I found a 69 sedan which was way overpriced for it's condition. Original owner with memories. Then the 73 popped up a couple of weeks later and that was the last one to ever pop up out here for sale.

I've had my '71 Newport mistaken for a Charger and for a Monaco on another occasion. I also get quite a few people who just have no idea what it is.
Funny, on a couple of occasions my '70 Meteor has been mistaken for a Chrysler. I remember one guy who asked me if it was a Chrysler. When I told him it was actually a Mercury, he asked me "who makes Mercury?"

About 1998 or so, I was in the Ford truck plant in Norfolk and driving the company Mercury wagon. The guard said they only let Ford products drive into the the plant.... I said "I have a Mercury, it's made be Ford" and she actually had to call someone to verify that Mercury was made by Ford.

I'm usually not a nice guy when approached about my cars in public. I don't care about "educating the public" or "reliving their memories". I'm usually just trying to get gas or run an errand. About the only exception is if someone calls out using the right make or model such as "Hey, nice Chrysler" or "What year is your Imperial?".
Drove one of my '58 Imperials to O'Reilly's and was showing the 392 to the store manager. One of the other employees came rushing out the door and excitedly yelled: "Hey, does it have a 350??" I made sure "350" became his new permanent nickname. That was almost 3 years ago and it's still his name.
Most of the time people will yell from across a parking lot to ask "what year is it?". I always wonder why it matters because they never know what make or model it is anyway. Their second question usually is to ask when/how I plan to restore it and then proceed to tell me how much my car could be worth. If I'm in my '68 Newport, I will play them along a little bit. After they've jabbered on about restorations and values, I'll look them dead in the eye and ask if they even noticed the roof was cutoff with a sawzall? That usually sends them packing pretty quick.

I was coming home from Carlisle last month. I was tired from the heat and we had a hard time getting a hotel. Finally getting one in Wilkes Barre, I was just getting out of the car and this guy asked "what year is it?" It was probably the worst timing...
My filter comes off when I'm tired and the smart *** comes out... I looked in square in the eye and said "It's 2016"... He looked at me, hesitated and then busted out laughing....

The 350 thing sparked a funny memory. I had a fully dressed 440 in the back of my truck perched up straight on a nice cradle and strapped down nice. I swing through a drive thru to grab a quick burger for lunch before off loading. The kid at the pay window asks "is that like, a 350??", i know that's probably the only engine he's ever heard of from his buddies talking about how their uncle/brother/whoever has one that's fast as hell. I tell him "it's a 440 dodge", he looks puzzled and says something like " whoa, that's big huh?" I was like "yeahhh"
I think there's a lot of people who think all V8s are either a 350 or a 302, no matter who makes the car.

My '66 Coronet has been called a Chevelle, a Comet, a GTX, and a RoadRunner.
My '86 Ford Country Squire gets the "Hey, that's the Griswold car!" or "Family Truckster" friggin' all the time. It's tan, the "Vacation" car was Pea Green...with EIGHT headlights, to boot.

At my last big car show, an elderly couple (80's?) limped by my car and the old man looks straight on at the car and asks me if it was a Lincoln or something. Before I could say something his wife says, No, it's a New Yorker.

I have a 64 dodge custom 880, the official name. That is what I wrote on the window card at a car show a few years back. I had, what I presume to be chevy guys walk by, and one said to the other, " Whats so custom about that?"
