What year is this?

Given all the model year changes, which year would be considered preferable, overall? I get nervous when I hear things like thinner sheetmetal, fewer reinforcements, etc.

Buy any Formal that appeals to you most and not worry about it as long as it has the manual a/c and not the AutoTemp II.

Agreed. Any ''Formal'' Newyorker, Monaco,Fury, 2dr, 4dr, wagon.

No Newports I want them all,(lol) and after I win the Mega mills twice in a row I plan to buy 'em.

Ok, I think I have this.

If it's a '78 the grill is wrong.

If it's a '77 the stripe is wrong.

If it's a '76 the stripe and the bumper is wrong.

I thought that Johnny Cash song was about a Cadillac? ;)

Don't get me started on Autotemp II...of the almost 30 years I've owned C bodies (slabs, fuseys and formals), the Autotemp has never worked in AC modes...always lost of heat to defrost the windshield, though!

One of my favourite cars was my 76 NYB 2 Dr hardtop that was a non- AC car...that thing was trouble free- traded it for a 68 NY fast-top plus $1250.00 cash...I still miss that car.

Fortunately for me I don't have the Auto Temp II.....unfortunately for me, it doesn't work correctly. I'll have to take it apart this spring and figure out why I'm not getting any airflow out of any vents including defrost. I'm thinking I have one or all of the vacuum actuators seized up and/or blend door linkage seized up. I have a purple vacuum hose and a ground wire hanging under the dash...which is part of the probelm also.

WTH was Mercedes thinking when they chose to use the AutoTemp II in their cars?? I think complexity is part of the German DNA.

On the shelf, I have an entire manual A/C system waiting to go in for when that dreaded day comes.........

I've thought about that...only two problems:

1) Finding one since it seems that 90% of formals came with Auto temp.
2) Finding one since it seems that 90% of formals came with Auto temp.

I know its only really one problem, but I thought it was so important that I'd mention it twice.

Nice. I know some Autotemp II gurus, so if I can find the time I'll get them working. My buddy has functioning Autotemp and I must confess that it is really sweet when it's working.

My Coupe is the only one where all the modes do thier thing on command, sadly it needs some R12 as it is low on charge... My other cars won't give me Vent etc. when I select them. Vacuum connections all good- no leaks and properly connected. Servos have been pulled, cleaned and bench tested as good (ie the motor works and will change the vacuum routing when power applied. I think the problem with the 4 dr and the wagon resides in the black box that provides the electric signal to the servo to then change the vacuum route to open close blend doors etc.

I'll fix it..it's almost a point of pride now...more like a grudge match

Do you have these?

I'm just catching up on reading a whack of threads, so this is a multi-comment reply:

The '78 Salon I parted out last summer was a 400 8¼" Canadian spec car. No lower rubber tips on the front bumper, manual a/c and heavy duty suspension but no air suspension.

I thought that diagnostic box shown above was for the '69 - '73 series cars. I have one of those as well (two actually) plus the later version for the ATCII cars.

The yahoo NewYorker site has an excellent tutorial on the ATCII cars, and according to the author of the tutorial, the system is (a) easy to fix and (b) reliable as all get-out once it's been sorted out. IIRC, most of the problems with ATCII are related to vacuum lines that get brittle and leak or dirt contamination in the control unit. Repairs do require pulling the I/P apart, but once everything is exposed, all of the shortcomings can be dealt with in one session and then it should be good for another 20 or so years. When it craps out again, most of us will be too old to give a rat's *** anyway.

Good to hear from you again, Kevin.
I got a good deal from your buddy for that hvac box. Worked out very well.
