Where was this Mopar Brochure/Ad Photo shot?

I love punishment. I will try another one as "moderator" of the "game". I also know EXACTLY where this photo was taken (nice Imp btw).

Like the feller in the lamp, three hints -- and no more :)

1. You can no longer park a car on this exact spot.

2. This photo was taken from a brochure and not a print ad (though there may be a print ad out there I didn't see it).

3. Nearly this exact location is in a couple of posts in C Body Bob's Old Photos with Cars thread (careful just diving into that thread -- there are almost 1,000 photos there, so you might wanna make a "guess" which ones to focus on).

Old photos with cars

My feeling is, with these hints, this is a "Goldilocks" search - not too easy, not too hard.

I plan to let search continue until somebody identifies and posts the location, or the thread conks out for whatever reason and then I will identify it.

Like the Genie said 3 wishes so here are my guesses let me know if any are close. Being so far away from any of these it's strictly guess work from your "clues".

1. Norfolk VA
2. Youngsville NC
3. Buffalo NY

I got nothin either, nice Imp though!

No, its not either of those three fine US cities.

"Go west young man", but don't cross the Mississippi River and don't cross the border. I hope that helps a little bit?

Folks. There is no "mis-direction" with this brochure picture or these clues. The "writer" (me) picked this clues to help you take an efficient path to follow .. no red-herrings, no dead ends, no head fakes .. to solve this one.

Its a mystery though and it wouldn't be any fun if the "writer" said on the first page of the story that the "butler did it." :)

The intention with the clues was to help put an "X" on the map, which is 90% of the challenge -- how to exclude, early on, the many many thousands of places you could look and get down to the likely place(s).

Unless you have stood on the spot, its 99.999% likely you will NOT recognize the place. Taking the pic at face value, it literally could be ANYWHERE .. hence the clues to follow to help focus the search, to a place, and then a specific location IN that place.

So in this case, we know the car, we know the year, we know it's a real city street and not a Hollywood backlot, we know the location has changed a bit in 45 years but its still there, we know its from a dealer brochure and/or print ad, and we know the exact location is in C Body Bob's thread (so ask yourself how the "writer" knows that?).

Honestly, all that narrows down the search effort dramatically. You'll see :). Again, I'd be happy to PM anyone who wants to know the place.

Hope someone figures it out. Whoever does, if you would please let us know your thought process, it would probably help the next person who tries to run the next "game" :)

See, the building on the left has me baffled. I don't think i've seen a live tree downtown in my life!
Could be Woodward looking north.

You put the "X' on the map for us, and now you're "circling the airport" about to land. No, not Woodward, but yes, its looking North. :)

I gotta sign off for a few hours. Hope to come back and find presents under the tree. I

f you nail it down, please share how you did it with the rest of us.

It looks familiar but so much has changed down there since then, first for the bad and now the good.

thats exactly right. a lot of valleys descended into since 1972. now movin up.

but whats changed (other than the exact spot where car is parked and its immediate surroundings) is out of view of photo.

and what has changed is what rapidtrans observed was buggin' him .. and noted in my hint #1 so you"d expect to see differences today when you found it.

i think you both (and others not from here) know this place very well and have even been there on occassion :)

Try #2.
How 'bout Washington Blvd. at Larned or Congress?
That would be Cobo on the left with the trees. Cobo has had major renovations since then. That would mean The Pontchetrain is off stage right.

66-75-3.jpg
66-75-4.jpg

The location is Washington Boulevard a bit south of Larned, in front of Cobo Hall (pre-renovation), looking NORTH on Washington Boulevard.

Cobo Center, as its now called, is where the North American International Auto Show (nee the Detroit Auto Show) is held every year.

The B&W photo with the Chrysler in the middle shows approximately where the '72 was parked, but the '72 would have been further to the RIGHT, and against the nearside curb.

I put Red Arrows on an old post card photo and a present day Google shot after the renovation (NORTH is DOWN on the pictures) to show approximate location of the '72 Imp in the photo.

66-75-1.jpg

Photo above is about the best view NORTH up Washington Boulevard we can get after the renovation to approximate the '72 shot. The old driveway would have been where you see the snow on the right side of photo. The buildings on the right (East) in the background are in the '72 photo also.

As for the clues.

Clue 1. The area has changed due to the Cobo Hall renovation .. that made it harder for any locals to be advantaged over non-locals. Trying to level the playing field a bit but more importantly tip everyone off its gonna look different today.

Clue 2. Had you found a 1972 Imperial brochure (or an ad with the photo), and source of the photo, you would have been able to solidly identify where to put the "X" on the map. Detroit to the exclusion of any other place would have been a safe bet.

Of the three photos on that page, its ALL Detroit, but the upper right shot is a "who knows where that is (I sure dont)" kinda pic, and the photo above the clipboard is too generic (there's a name on the yellow brick building but its illegible -- it looks familiar to me but I dunno where it is).

66-76.jpg

Clue 3. See Post #359 (Page 18) and #365 (page 19) in C Boby Bob's thread. With 1,000 posts, how would I know the location is there .. unless I posted it?

Search the thread with my member name as the search term, and you'll see about 100 posts, down from 1,000 to slog through.

If you had clue 2 nailed down, search that thread on you get maybe 30 posts (more manageable) if you use 'Detroit" as the search term .. then its easy to find another clue -- almost the exact location but about 250 yards NORTH of where the '72 was parked.

Somebody else wanna give it a go as "game show host"? :)

i was tryin to steer you (and others building on your guesses) northwest with that "go west but dont cross the border" comment to the closest Canadian/US big city crossing west of Buffalo .. Detroit.

but hey if you wrestle down that Briggs Mfg/C-Body connection thing, that'll get ya a few "you da man" accolades .. its a "hard" puzzle. Hint? "Follow the Corporate Money Trail" about 60 yrs ago :).

I 'll repost that picture and question here to keep Bob's thread clean.
