I have a 1967 Polara born with a 318 . My power steering pump gave up on me. I ordered a cardone 96-6184 that says it is compatible. It's mostly true that it looks compatible, but the bracket will need doctored a bit. I can manage the bracket. My original power steering pump has a larger shaft in circumference than the new one. My original pulley just drops on. Does anyone have any experience with this particular pump and what pulley it actually takes. Everything I'm seeing says 5/8 but almost all say they are keyed. My original is press fit and the new one has no key way on the shaft so it is also press fit.

from cardone's picture it appears to be a Federal pump...if your original looks similar except the depressed part on the back of the pump is larger and the rear bolthole is in a higher position your original is a TRW...if your original's filler neck is oval in cross section you have a Saginaw...I know the Federal and TRW pullys press on...I wasn't aware that the shafts were different diameters though...the shaft on the Federal is threaded internally and the TRW is not...I might be able to grab some measurements tomorrow

The only pulleys I can find are the ones for the big block and are almost 7 inches where as my stock one measured 5. I don't know how bad that would be. The only other option at this point is to send it back and see if I can rebuild the old one. I thought about that but couldn't find any good videos of how to get the resivoir off the pump. If I converted to the newer style I would have to change water pump and radiator. Maybe I can find one on ebay.

looks like the Federal uses a 5/8 shaft and the TRW is 11/16...and the Federal pully is larger in diameter than the TRW, at least on the 2 cars I have here...I don't know what the actual diameters are, as I saw this after I got back from the shop...I'd try Mancini as a source for new or Murray Park for used

Send the Cardon't thing back, and count your blessings. W a 318, its likely you have the smaller TRW pump, if it's not a Federal. W you year model, it could be a Federal pump. Does it have a small or large divot in the back side of the reservoir? Large ==> TRW, Small ==>Federal. I suspect you have the SMALL TRW, from what you've typed. A picture here would help.

Here are some pics of old pumps if that helps:

The larger one is a Saginaw pump, the smaller a Federal TRW. More confusing w/o clear labeling. Did these come off some Dodges? That Saginaw looks a lot like what they put in pickups and vans from the late 60's on. The smaller TRW is supposed to be for A bodies, though our '66 engine had one on it when we bought it.

The saginaw would be my choice. I looked for a spare but found none.
That pump is only thru 69 with the cast iron water pump.
Saginaw, because a rebuild kit is available everywhere.
Now if you need a 70 up aluminum water pump, steering pump...

According to the FSM, there's two different pumps that came on a Polara. A TRW and a Federal. See the illustration for the rear view. The TRW pump will also have a hex shaped hole in the shaft.

So, if you have the TRW pump originally, that Cardone pump is a Federal pump and yea, it'll work if you change the brackets and pulley, but really, it's the wrong pump. This stuff happens as a lot of older parts listings are just plain wrong.

Normally, I would suggest sending your old pump off for rebuilding to this place. Pump Rebuilds — Powersteering.com But I see they aren't rebuilding the large shaft TRW pumps anymore (which is what I believe you have).

I don't know if any of the other places are rebuilding this pump or not. You could try Lares.

The Saginaw pump is a good replacement, but you will need new brackets.

Bouchilon has the brackets for either the Federal or the Saginaw, and I think it has the pulley for the Cardone Federal pump, but it's $$$$. Pumps too. I'd look into the Saginaw as it's a good pump.

Mea culpa mea culpa! Looking again at the smaller pump, I now see that what appeared to be a rise is indeed the characteristic big divot indicative of the TRW! Thx to Big John for providing a pic with precisely that smaller pump's backside shown CLEAN! I have one of those too, which actually came with the '66 Newport when we bought it, though I changed it out for the larger pump. I find the Thomas pumps easy to rebuild, so long as the sole affliction is with seals and springs. I got one in good shape 4 years ago and am running it now. EZPZ and FAR less expensive to DIY these. Now, if the vanes get buggered, you need a machinist....

I LIKE the TRW pumps, and love the old variable tension brackets. My power steering does fine in all the weather we get down here, though ppl say when it gets REALLY COLD, they don't do so well. I wouldn't know.

finally remembered to measure the pullys...yes the TRW is 5 inch and the Federal is 7...crank pullys are about the same so I guess each manufacturer wants to turn their pumps at different rpm

The 2 pumps I posted pics of (post 6), one pulley is 5 inches, the other 5.5. This is what's currently on my '67 Monaco with 318:

I did try to measure it, it is at least 6 inches but not much more. Was the cap being metal or plastic a random thing, or was it based on year?

running the larger pulley will not hurt
now where do you get the Federal PS Fluid does Sta Lube still make it?

The old power steering pump is a TRW, it has the big divut in the back and the larger shaft. I've went forward with the federal. It is a whole can of worms for sure. From having to use different pulleys, to bracket mods. Now the thing that is holding me back is the federal pump uses an O ring style hose instead of the flared fitting. It seems people are making a Franken hose that has the correct fitting for the steering box and the o ring fitting end for the pressure port on the power steering pump. Im trying to make this federal work. May be a lost cause. We will see.
