My 67 newport shifts at 16 mph from 1 to 2. when it shifts it is very crisp all the other gears are smooth shifts. The car has always shifted this way. is it normal from 1 to 2 to shift this way?

Torqueflites by design are 100% mechanical/hydraulic beasts as im sure you know, at least they were for the first thirty plus years of their design existence. Clutches and bands allow for the transition between the three speeds relatively smoothly. That being said, shifts and transitions being absorbed by the friction materials equals wear, no matter how slight. The crisper the shift, the less wear that can take place. Id bet yours is working as designed, and theres nothing to be concerned about, as its actually a good thing. A Torqueflite is not going to "bang something loose" with tight shifts, no way.

Agreed. Firm shift means less slip in the frictions. Otherwise, the torque converter can also cushion the shifts a bit. Chrysler torque converters tend to be a bit "tighter" than other brands, too.

Do you know the history of the transmission? The speed of the 1-2 shift seems correct. Is the shift the same with light throttle and hard throttle? If so someone may have installed a shift improver kit and taken out the accumulator spring at some point. This will not hurt your transmission but if it bothers you you could have it checked to see if the accumulator spring is missing, install a new one and maybe even back off line pressure just a bit.

Interesting you mention that. The 904 in my Swinger shifts like that as well but I like it that way. If you back off the kickdown adjustment a little, it will shift a bit smoother and a little sooner.

Seems like most torqueflites I've had shifted a little quicker and snappier from 1 to 2 than from 2 to 3. I never really thought about it before, but since you mentioned it, I believe that to be true. I would think it's just a characteristic. Ideally both shifts would probably be the same.

Pretty normal. Don't go looking for trouble.
Do not back down the throttle pressure or "kick down" linkage. Especially on a used trans.

The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts will not be the same because different things are happening in each gear.
2nd gear a band applies and the overrunning clutch goes from hold to release.
3rd gear a clutch pack applies and a band comes off.

Double check your linkage to the carb/kickdown. Maybe pressure is a bit high at lower RPM.
