Hi everyone!

(I just noticed I posted this in the wrong forum! Sorry...)

I just picked up a garaged 1967 New Yorker with 26K miles on her. She's beautiful and 100% original (except for heater hoses and radiator hoses, as far as I can tell).

I tried to free up the temp control lever, which was sticking, and I promptly snapped the end off the control cable at the lever. This caused me to dis-assemble the dash under the radio and trace the cable to the water temp. valve on the passenger side up under the dash near the blower motor.

I can see that the lever controls this valve via the cable. I traced it up through heater duct piping (which I really do not want to remove!) I unclipped the cable, worked it loose a bit, cut it back about 3", bent a new "S" into it and re-installed it. Now, I can move the temp lever if I'm down there also putting pressure on the valve lever... not the best, but at least I can control the heat and shut it off if I need to.

Question is... is the cable split up under the dash into two pieces, or otherwise clipped or mounted up in there behind the heater ducts? I could not get the cable out, and I didn't want to go farther because the duct tubes are fragile... Anyone have a picture or diagram of how the temp control cable is routed?

Thanks!!

The cable is secured in a couple places by clips on the heater box and onto the posts of the air gates with locking spring washers. The replacement duct tubes are cheap and easy to get on the web, just measure the diameter before ordering. The cables may need a bit of lube as will the heater leaver pivots.

In my '67, the Temp. Control lever on the dash operated a cable that went to a pivot arm on the heater box.
That pivot arm then operated another cable that went to the valve.
It kept binding so I simply ran a cable directly from the Temp. Control to the valve.

The FSM for my 68 NYEr says that there is a turn buckle for adjusting the length of the cable. This is to ensure that the valve is opening and closing the whole way. If I recall correctly there was only one cable.

How about some pictures of the car and the story as to how you found and bought it. Why did you want a 67 NYer? We do like lots of pictures.

FSM illustrations can be confusing.
In my '67, I actually tore into the dash.
There were two cables.

WOW! Thanks for all the help! I'm fairly sure it's the intermediate pivot arm that's binding... That's what I thought it looked like. I suppose when I get some desire to have easier control, I'll take it apart.

For pics, please see my "Introduction" post... I posted them all... Here's some teasers...

I believe they are either the original tires, or something pre-71. Firestone closed them out in '71. I took them off and I'm holding them...

Oh, and they're Firestone J78-14's, 500 dual stripe... I checked the tires out, and they look surprisingly good... I can't see any dry rot... I still don't trust them though. :wideyed:

That's a nasty spot... So, I'd have to take the whole box out to get at that and replace the cables... wonder if the cables exist anywhere except in our dreams...

Thanks for the AMAZING details!!! Way more than I ever expected!

Explains why I can't simply yank the cable out from around the box... :)

Spray some PB Blaster on the pivot and both ends of the cable, let it set for a while and try working it back and forth. That car is a beauty, what a great rich looking color. I saw it for sale on CL a while back, I'm glad it found a good home. That is one of my favorite C-body models.
