British/American car culture clash circa '73

I've been watching 70s British car reviews lately on YouTube... This is the sort of thing I think of when I say that if the NSA is truly spying on us, they must think I'm an incredible nerd. But I digress...

In a strange way, this video creates more questions than it answers.



For one thing, they must have been a lot less strict about the whole right-hand-drive thing than the Aussies who required full conversions. But that's the least of it.

I've never understood the rather extreme dislike of American cars by British TV presenters, apparently from at least this date, to Jeremy Clarkston. After watching hours of video on British Leyland and its problems, you can see they're plainly getting their asses handed to them by Continental Europe... Mostly Germany via VW, but also Fiat and some French cars as well. Yet from the TV presenters there seems to be an admiration for the German makes who are inflicting most of the damage. Especially ironic since FAR more than just economic damage was being done just 30 years earlier.

Meanwhile, it appears that any American company would be overjoyed just to move a few hundred extra cars annually. These American cars are really just a novelty, hardly a threat. Gas mileage alone would keep anyone from seriously considering them, but the host is nothing but snark when it comes to mentioning power locks, windows, seats, etc. I mean even the humble, brown Mercury sedan looks like it came from another planet compared to British offerings of the era.

Oh well. I wouldn't have guessed there was a single 1972 Cadillac Eldorado sold new in Great Britain, let alone 35 of them. I'm glad they spent most of their review in Ford products. As much as I love big cars, I've always thought the '71-'76 Eldorado was a hideous turd. Too bad there were no Mopars in this mix. A space-ship of a '73 Monaco would have been nice to see.
 
The Brits were less concerned with lhd as they had all the lhd European cars visiting especially after the channel tunnel was built. Like the presenter said, US cars are too big for a tiny island like theirs.
