Cylinders 3 and 5 running cooler

I'm running a OEM unit from HalifaxHops now, and my blue box from Rick is in the trunk as an emergency use only "spare."

    Choke settings

So I did a check on my choke pull-off and it failed the test procedure (it would not hold vacuum for 10 seconds). Interesting, since it was working fine 2 years ago when I rebuilt the carb. I was surprised it worked as well as it did then, so I guess I got lucky. I've ordered a replacement from...

    Choke settings

I checked that yesterday with my vacuum pump and it was working. I’ll try to observe its function while the car is running. Thanks. EDIT - it was moving under vacuum applied, but not HOLDING vacuum. So, it was indeed not working correctly.

    Choke settings

So, after my distributor grenaded and caused all manner of bucking and stumbling, my choke settings are no longer what they used to be. My fast idle speed has changed and the choke plate seems to be closed too much, causing it to run like poo-poo on initial start. I’ve made some adjustments to...

    Distributor shaft side play

my ‘08 Uplander has been one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. The 3.9l pushrod V6 is bulletproof. I’ve changed out axle hubs, CV axles, a fuel pump, several sets of tires, rotors and pads 3 or 4 times, sliding door bearings, spark plugs and wires, door lock actuators, yet because I’ve...

    Distributor shaft side play

As an aside, I was changing out the front hub/bearing assemblys on my mid-aughts GM FWD minivan, and I asked a "professional" mechanic friend of mine if I should do things like replace the lower ball joints, tie rod ends, etc., while I had it all apart. He replied, if those OEM parts are still...

Front door window trim loose - how to secure ?

I could give some questionable advice but I’ll refrain to avoid the red X. Following, since I have the same issue.

Question about 2-cycle oil additive and spark plug color

I am also running ethanol free. Thanks for your insights. I'm going to a couple of tanks of gas with no 2 cycle oil at all and see if it's a carb issue first. If nothing, I'll go back to adding it in and watch the color. Thank you!

Question about 2-cycle oil additive and spark plug color

I was told it was to replace lead as an upper-end lubricant

Question about 2-cycle oil additive and spark plug color

So upon the advice of some here at FCBO, I've been using 2-cycle marine oil as an additive to my gas at 1oz:5 gal of 91 non-ethanol gasoline. While dealing with my distributor malfunction and troubleshooting the entire ignition system, I found my spark plugs were quite brown and glazed (making...

Cylinders 3 and 5 running cooler

AND THE PROBLEM WAS . . . #3 spark plug side electrode got bumped upon installation and had zero gap. It probably, kinda, sorta, worked above 1500 rpm, but at idle I don't think it was firing. It was basically black, while the other plugs around it had started to take on the tan color. I...

Cylinders 3 and 5 running cooler

I've never heard of using a shop vac in this manner. Where does one put the shop vac tube, and where does one listen from/to? Thanks!

Cylinders 3 and 5 running cooler

Great advice everyone. Thank you. I'm gonna pull plugs 1,3 & 5 just to compare. These are brand new plugs that have only ONE run cycle on them (yesterday). Then I'll use the borescope to take a peak inside the cylinders. After that I'll get her warmed up and use a vacuum gauge to see what...

Cylinders 3 and 5 running cooler

Got my distributor replaced with one from HalifaxHops after the "Rick E." unit I had self destructed. The engine fired right up, but there still seems to be an issue. I haven't driven it yet, but just getting it warmed up I can tell it's running rough. I put new plugs in it while the dizzy...

    Distributor shaft side play

Yes. I checked FSM, and .006" is correct. I measured with feelers and I came up with .016" of side play. Trash, in other words. I don't think I want to rebuild this distributor, as who knows what else might be lurking below . . . I'll check with @halifaxhops and see what he can do for a...

    Distributor shaft side play

I’ll check the specs in the FSM but this is the Rick E distributor I bought two years ago. It only has about 2000 miles on it.

    Distributor shaft side play

Please see video below. I don’t know what the specs are but it seems like this is probably too much play and I will just end up destroying another reluctor wheel and pick up if I don’t replace the bushing. Let me know please, thanks.

    Timing chain slipped a tooth?

I can’t reset the gap because the reluctor wheel itself is in chunks. I do have the screw. I just removed it to see if it would come off easily.

    Timing chain slipped a tooth?

Diagnosis: catastrophic interference between reluctor wheel and pickup. Can I just replace the wheel and pickup or do I mistrust this entire distributor as “chinesium” and replace it out right?

    Timing chain slipped a tooth?

Thanks. It's really hard to tell what sounds are what in the video because of the amount of compression an iPhone puts on the audio. It makes it sound like the engine is exploding when it's really not loud at all. There was just a "new" noise but it doesn't come through in the video very...
