Assuming the front bezel can be detached from this mechanism, would this result in the same / identical autopilot control mechanism to be found in a '67 Monaco?

Not likely - while some of the mechanism parts are the same, the arrangement of the controls are unique to each model. I'd have to see the rear of the bezel you've got to be 100% sure, but at first glance, I don't think so.

It's remotely possible that the Imperial controls could be retrofitted to fit that bezel - it looks like the dial "wheel" could fit the lower opening of the Monaco bezel, and the on/off switch and light that sits above would be similar to the on/off and light located at the right in the Imperial setup, but it's different enough that it would take a great deal of finagelling to see if it would even be possible.

As you can see from the parts catalogue, there are 4 different setups - Plymouth (+ Canadian Dodge), Dodge, Chrysler and Imperial. Each control and switch and mounthing arrangement is different.

It would be a nightmare to try and adapt one to the other.

Was '67 the last year for the dashboard thumb wheel? After that they were controlled by the turn signal stalk (and the mechanism under the hood was fundamentally different) ?

68 in Imperials still used the wheel. All others used the turn signal stalk. Imps still used the old electromechanical autopilot unit, while all others also moved to the vacuum controlled version. Imps still called it Autopilot, but all the others moved to the title Speed Control.

I've found it way easier to retrofit a '70s cruise control.
You need the cruise control unit, the throttle linkage add on, the cable mount, the cruise brake light switch, the cruise control turn signal wand, wiring and the 2 piece spedo cable. I don't know when they went to the larger speedometer threads, I know my '66 doesn't have the large threads, and my '69 Roadrunner did (the car I added it to decades ago)
My $.05 (since they don't make pennys any more)
