I agree with 70 droptop, my 72 Newport had the same problem. Melted harness in the steering column. Just made my own wire harness with bullet connectors. No problems since.

Don’t mess with those firewall bulkhead plugs unless you absolutely have to. I cleaned mine up and greased them & hope I never have to touch them again. Only thing worse than an electrical problem is multiple electrical problems
