1970 Fury GT found in Amarillo, TX.

Tail lenses are stuck in the trunk at the moment. Hope to have them out today after I pull the back seat. The wiring is a bit of a mystery. I put in new headlight and taillight bulbs because they were all blown out. Turn the light switch on and get nothing. Turn the car on, and they come on, but as soon as I rev the engine, all the bulbs blow up. Did some tests and it looks like the alternator isn't charging the battery at all, it instead is running direct to all the wiring in the car with no regulation. We changed the voltage regulator and that made no difference. Found some melted wires under and back up in the dash. Also found a lot of hacked and spliced in mystery wires.

Gadzooks. I hope you are disconnecting the battery whenever you aren't around. I hate when shadetrees mess with electrical stuff.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I found that one side of the fuse box is getting regulated power and the other side is getting straight power from the alternator. Very strange.

That can happen when you lose a neutral and... oh wait, that's AC house wiring!

With regards to the electrical problems you note with charging etc., a somewhat common problem with Chrysler products of this era is that the output from the voltage regulator goes to the bulkhead connector into the car and then to and through the amp gauge and then back out the bulkhead connector to the battery to charge the battery. The bulkhead connectors are prone to getting corroded causing problems. The wiring to the amp gauge is barely adequate and if too much amperage goes through the wiring, which can happen if someone put a 75 amp alternator in the car, can result in melted wiring.

Suggest that you get some electrical contact cleaner and pull each bulkhead connector and clean the contacts. You may want to "Google" MOPAR amp gauge bypass and see if that helps or fixes your problem. You may find instructions on this site, if not, they are on www.moparts.com.

Good luck and keep posting questions as well as your progress. We want you to have a safe and trouble free trip back to California.

Wow, very interesting to see these pics. Looks like this is before the dash and door panels were redone. I'm hoping that door panel is stashed in the trunk!

First of all congratulations.

I am sorry but the door panel will probably not be in the trunk. It was missing 3,5 years ago.
At that time it was a non-Runner, too.
A friend of mine checked it out for me.
It was priced reasonably (5k$) back then but I couldn't stand the brown colour

Welcome, Eric! Great find on the GT. I'm very close to you in North San Gabriel and own a '65 300 'vert. Definitely take Steve up on his offer! He's a very knowledge guy willing to share/help others out. He assisted me many times during the course of my restoration.

How did I know that was your red X....

Back then it was for sale as a (regular) SportFury, but someone thought it could be a GT....

Yes, this car was available 3-5 years ago also in Texas. I thought it could be the same one initially, but until I saw the interior that had been redone in the photos, I was not certain. But it is indeed the same car. It looks better cleaned up and with more than a couple of garage photos from last time.

Welcome! Nice surprise, I was wondering how we all missed this one, especially if there was already a thread. What's up with the tail lenses and the wiring? Was it in process of being redone by the previous owner before he died? Double jealous, BTW, you scored a SFGT and an invite to Steve's stash.

:D
All you guys are welcome to visit when ever you are out here. Even all the Trump lovers, atheists, Obama haters, California haters and other "deplorables"! Just give me a little notice.

Got the wiring sorted enough to get me on the to road with working headlights and brake lights. Crawled through the back seat and popped the trunk. Found the tail lenses, original spare tire, an extra door, and bunch of other parts I haven't really looked at yet. Drove as far as Santa Rosa, New Mexico and got a flat tire. Also noticed a small pin hole leak at the top of the radiator. Replaced the two front tires with the best Santa Rosa, NM had to offer. Ha ha! Well at least the size of the tires is correct. Dealing with the radiator now. The adventure continues...

Awesome Eric,....

It reminds me of a trip or two I've taken to "get the car".

Memories you'll never forget.

Good for you!!!!

I see good parts in your trunk.
