1970 Plymouth Fury Convertible build

You got it made having Swamp make you a trunk floor, those things are hard to get here and no one makes a decent copy on the aftermarket scene. So we are a little jealous. If I had the money I would invest in an electric roller machine to make up trunk floors and sell them. It looks like your project is coming along nicely, dont sweat it, it is going good.

Before I post an update on the Fury, I thought I'd share a few photos I took today at a breakfast meet I started with a few other guys 10 years ago. Inspiration indeed!

So with the trunk done, it's on to the main floor of the cabin. There had already been a bunch of patches to the floor - I'll live with them as I'm trying to do a lot with a limited budget.

The main area needing attention was the driver's foot well.

You can see from the last shot where the rockers have been exposed just to be sure they were sound.

Several small holes got similar treatment:

Meanwhile, the inner fenders got a patch and a lick of paint too.

So question time:
20160330_165235.jpg

Not sure what you guys call the round fasteners - actually I'm not sure what we call them either, but am I right in thinking I need to drill these out to get that chrome trim piece off? Are replacements available? Do I need a special tool to fit them again?

And while we're asking questions, could you guys recommend a good workshop manual for this car?

Cheers,

Gary

Gary, if you go on amazon you can get the shop repair manual as a reprint. Those snaps are not original. It had hooks that went over the chrome peice. I bet. Wolfen has that trim peice

Go to Mymopar.com and look in the Tools/Reference section to download a Shop Manual and a Parts List.

The roof rail is incorrect, '70 used plastic hooks attached to the cover instead of the '69 dome fasteners. I can take pictures of mine if wish.

Domes ended in 68. 69 had clips like yours.

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the site from another Alpine White, 318, 70 convertible owner. Mine has a white convertible top. It's interesting that yours is black. Mine's a driver too. I took my family for a short ride this weekend, top down. Hope it's going to warm up next weekend, so we can go for a longer jaunt. Ben

BTW, it would be great to have a friend like Swamp. How much did he charge for the trunk floor?

Those press down clips certainly are not right, the chrome strip should have nothing on it, I will take some pics tomorrow of the one I have which is also available if you wish to replace yours, That chrome strip also screws in from the underside, not the top.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll take a look for the manuals.

Wollfen, I'm interested in those strips.

1970FuryConv, that car looks awesome. Something for me to aim for. Swamp is working at a massive discount for me, so I couldn't possibly say how much that trunk floor cost.

So, more rust.

And more stout work:

So, onto the cowl area. This bit was hidden from view by the front fenders. It adjoins the rusted out holes that first got the car parked up and I half expected more of the same. I was pleasantly surprised to find mostly metal, with a few small holes. Need a patch panel:

So far so good, but when the hole was cut for the panel to go in:

Here is pic of the strips, they are stainless and are scratch free with no dings. PM me and i will let you know a price. Cheers,
Gary

Thanks, guys.

So let's get up to date.

A bigger hole was required to get in to make repairs. Before going any further, the existing patch was tacked into place.
IMG-20160401-WA0000.jpg

Then the bigger hole cut out.
IMG-20160401-WA0001.jpg

Lovely. Numerous patches were made and are currently getting welded in.

And that's about where we are, ish.

So the engine that I pulled out was taken to a machine shop. Two pistons were a little stuck in the bores. Even with all pistons removed, the crank still wouldn't rotate. This is main bearing number 4:

Engine builder thinks it got hot, although the car ran just fine prior to being parked. The main cap now doesn't snap into the register though. New set of mains and an align bore would be more than buying another block.

So I bought another block today:

£150 - $212 at today's exchange rate. Think I did OK, how much would a cut out, bare block 318 cost you in the US I wonder? Nipped that into the engine builder. The crank, will clean up OK he thinks. Fingers crossed.

So, more trim questions, I'm afraid. Someone has at sometime done something horrible to the side trim on this car:
20160405_154519.jpg

Lurking beneath the gunk (looks like dried glue) are screws:
20160405_154514.jpg

I'm guessing they're not factory? What should hold it on? Those fasteners with a threaded bar and a flat oval head that rotates to lock into the trim? (That description makes sense to me!)

Thanks for reading this far.

Gary

Hi Gary, there should be plastic clips that are pressed into holes along the body panel and the trim clips onto the plastic holders. I will get a pic tomorrow for you to see. One end of the trim does have a nut on the inside of the panel to hold the end on. I have a full set of dent free trim for this model of car but they are very long.

Time for an update. Driver's side patches welded into the area under the cowl.
IMG-20160406-WA0006.jpg

Painted and then the top patch goes on.
IMG-20160406-WA0002.jpg

Patch made for the window surround, but not welded in until we test fit the new windshield.
IMG-20160406-WA0001.jpg

Then it's on to the other side. I bet Swamp that side wouldn't be as bad. Swamp won the bet. Here's the bit behind the heater assembly.

More patching:

IMG-20160407-WA0003.jpg

Got to give credit to Swamp's partner in crime Moomin for among other things, making the S shaped patch.

Obviously, there's more rust behind the firewall.

Which needed some cunning patches.

Shrinker/stretcher and bead roller both earning their keep. As with the trunk floor, holes drilled for self-tapping screws prior to welding in place.

With one long term project almost ready to hit the road again.

I have some garage space and some spare time to take on a little bit of plymouth work too. Figured the front valance had my name on it,

Reckon I'll break the grill trying to straighten it?
