1971 Chrysler T&C 440

I knew the 440 had to be suspect the fact it was still in the car... but that's also what kept the car complete. Currently the cylinders are soaking in ATF, last effort to see if I can get it turning all the way over. More than likely, it will need to be gone through. I tested 3.23 sure grip... tight as a glove, was pleased to find it had one as it was not on data tag, not uncommon.

Have heard that does work well, didn't have the acetone, was trying to get it soaking and out of town. Am not ruling out bottom end issues, however nothing coming out block or metal in oil.

Jer is right 50/50 is the way to go. The acetone will thin the mix and more easily saturate the corrosion.

Well, the ATF worked after sitting for a week. The motor is turning full rotation... hope to get her running yet, we'll see how well.

Attaboy. No BFH necessary. Good sign.

It really shows the abilities of ATF... literally did not take much resistance to get her moving, on an engine that initially I thought was locked up. Hopefully she's not a smoker Lol

I used to have a 70 town n country,it was my first mopar,it had a 400 eng, baby blue valour interior from head to toe and front to back,I removed the chrome and filled the holes and put SS craigers with big tires, then it was stolen and never recoverd, that was 30yrs ago but I still miss my party wagon.

Someone had to put that 400 motor in that car. The 400 wasn't an available option until 1972 to replace the 383. It could of even had a 440 for the original motor.

You can ID the motor from the fender tag. I just re-read your post and I believe the wagon is long gone. Too bad, that's a nice wagon!

The cars is not going anywhere. I am gone for a week at a time for work... down in So. Ca. right now. I was in Tulare, Ca. yesterday morning tempted to go look at that '69 Monaco 440HP Alan said was for sale... I got the disease bad

Haha, interesting. I do recall saying that but not who or where. I have had two different people here in Lompoc that know the seller and one that also found him and got a car along with a couple others that asked if i got my car from him. I didn't realize he was that well known or easy to find.

The Monaco is rough but restorable and worth it if you ask me, a HP 440 with cruise all on a 4-door sedan!

Alan, do not know of him but was tempted to PM you on location if willing... stayed in motel in Tulare that night. I was in Salinas a few nights ago picking up an original black '62 Dodge 880 2dr for a friend. I am all over the map at any given moment. Someone definitely knew what they wanted when they ordered the Monaco... floors better with carpeting?... hmmm. Now, I got the wagon to deal with, but the Monaco is something you don't see that often...

So... with rocker shafts in place, cylinders freed up, two valves unstuck and a $3 pushrod, am liking how she turns over. Got the radiator and hoses lined up, but no shroud. More importantly, wiring harnesses need to be addressed... from headlamps back and from the starter forward. I am going the make another run back to the yard for needed parts. More than likely, will be posting laundry list for wagon under parts wanted...

Baby steps, coming along slowly... as usual work gets in the way. I am transporting a friends 65 sport fury convertible to southern oregon... he gave me $140, a boiled out rad and both factory mounting and shroud bolts... don't know who made out better. Lol It all works out in the end.

in the late 70s, I bought a T and C for $75 bucks, was gonna harvest the motor , but found the trans wasn't burned up , a cooler line was crimped . A splice and a avs I had pulled off a Roadrunner were installed, and it was a driver. Smoked a lot if you floored it and I swapped a set of 3.23 gears in it. White with faded woodside decals. One night I was on a main drag in town and a Trans Am pulled up, the driver and his girl were laughing at me and my wagon. As the light turned green, I pulled the column shifter in low and stomped it. The trans am was in hot pursuit, but the 323s and weight transfer gave me the race, with a added benefit of the Chrysler really smoking them. They turned off before the next light and I looked at the trail of oil smoke that trailed behind me for 3 blocks. No police, either.
A week later, a guy showed up at my house with 350 bucks and drove off with my Town and Country. Dual exhaust, the 350 horsepower T code but it sure showed me. 30 years later I still laugh.

Great story! I grew up on wagons and they usually ended up at the drag strip. Even the late model smogger big block cars ended up with built early spec motors. Mid 13's, around 5000lbs... good times! No one likes an *** beatin from a wood sided wagon. Runnin out the tach to 6,000 and a good 5 count before speedo comes off 120 in a long roof... the good days!

Coming along nicely, eh? I'm just following along cause I think its so cool to drive around in a big block Chrysler wagon. Can't wait to see it street legal.

It may just have the power driver's seat in it for a bit but getting her revived is key. I dumped some 60W racing oil in the cylinders that was lying around. Had her up in the air first time... never understood 440 or any BB and single exhaust... 2" at best in areas... I know it's a Chrysler, but C'mon! ... it's gotta go

Yes, that is at best, ridiculous. My Imperial had a 2" single exhaust system with resonator. I chucked that and changed it over to 3" dia. dual exhaust system all the way back with chrome tips and could actually feel a bit of difference just by letting the 440 breath a little better.
