1978 New Yorker: Adding optional equipment

If it's a nice weather day I try to drive the NYB. But that RAM is spoiling me!

The 300C is nice too.
Nice! I also have a 1965 Imperial with 10,500 original miles. I'll post some pics of it soon even though this may not be the correct forum.

Hello All,

Just purchased a 1978 New Yorker Black Coupe with 34,000 original miles. i love it but it seems to not be as well equipped as other New Yorker's I have seen.

It has:

Cloth interior
Standard am/fm radio

Does not have:

Power Seats,
Power Trunk Release
Tilt / Telescoping Wheel

My question is can I add power seats and trunk release and any other electrical accessories such as cb radio or 8 track player radio without modding the dash harness? Are the harnesses provisioned with the necessary connectors for optional equipment from the factory?

Thanks!
:welcome: now :stop:... you have a sweet car, don't mess with her.

My first advice is that you research in here for the wiper issue that 78's have... and plan to repair yours.

Power driver seat frames are hard to come by in working condition, but you will only ever need to adjust it so often, so why mess with something several Formal owners have wished they had.

Power deck releases were not as common as you'd think, and again, why focus on adding something that has reliability issues?

Your non-tilt wheel isn't cracked, good luck finding a tilt wheel as nice... why take on the change unless you really want to enjoy the parts hunt so many of us experience. (I like the parts hunt, but know a good thing when I see it).

Radios that old are problems waiting to happen. I would recommend that you research in here for ideas for a while before investing... you may decide to have yours rebuilt into a modern guts version rather than battle the old one's.

After sitting for so long, I would instead recommend that you put your efforts and resources into going through the steering, suspension and driveline components... clean up everything and replace what rubber has rotted away, all of the fluids and I bet you have a bunch of dry, hard old seals that need replacement.

Give her some road time and do some research before you decide to follow through on the additions... you may change your mind.

Remember if you switch to T/T column you cannot use the three spoke sport steering wheel which I actually prefer as for appearance. I would consult a trusted body shop on removal of the rub strip on both sides. That is an add on that I removed from mine as the picture below shows. For me it looks better without it.

I can't tell in the picture.....

Do you have the red decals on the mirrors?

No. a mirror was replaced before I purchased it with a new one and graphic was removed from other one to match, I have not found anyone that reproduces them yet in my color or at all.

Mr C. knows somebody in Canada that had a vendor that repopped those decals. They looked OEM and excellent. I tried to follow/locate the vendor but it wasn't clear how to contact that vendor in Canada. There is a thread here somewhere. I forgot which thread that had a picture of the decals on a sheet of 8 or 10 of them.

I wish I would of known you about 7 years ago. The mirrors I lucked out getting from the junkyard in New Mexico had perfect red decals on them. My NYB is B3 Blue so I soaked them in acetone until the decals peeled off. The mirrors were NOS quality and I would of traded that set with you.

Thank you cantflip. I have also been thinking about just leaving it alone and focusing on mechanical.

Thats a real beauty you got there!

I know about the wiper issue for the 1978 model and I plan on addressing that issue with 1978NYB's mod of the crank arm.

I cant seem to get the engine to run right. I have already:

Changed fluids
Spark Plugs
Wires
Checked for vacuum leaks
Cleaned out fuel tank
New fuel filter

Not sure if its a carburetor problem at this point or an issue with the lean burn system.

Does anyone have experience with doing the lean burn swap while keeping a factory look? What's involved in the swap besides distributor and ignition module? Thanks!
