just got a 1998 parts dodge truck with no trans.
My question is how different is a 1998 318 motor from earlier 70s,80s motors?
Would I be able to bolt on a older intake and carb, distributor?
Are motor mounts in the same place?
Trans bolt up the same?
Anything I should know.

It is VERY different. Intakes don't swap, there is a carb manifold that will fit the magnum engine. The oil pan is one of the few things that's interchangeable if needed.

1998 I_think_still has the older mounts, I know they were there in 1997.

Trans bolts up just like before. 318 magnum is still zero balance.

Distributor should just drop in.

Now the problem, fuel delivery. The camshaft doesn't have the snout to mount the fuel pump eccentric. You'll need a custom camshaft or use an electric fuel pump.

As far as the intake manifold, just a 5.2L version of the 5.9L Magnum V-8?

Just need a fuel pump that will supply the needed pressure and volume for the EFI system? With your transmission of choice.

Just speculatin'

The magnum motors will drop right in the older Mopars.
U need a intake to run a carb on the Magnum. Older ones will not work but you can pick them up new or used fairly cheap. Put the older style LA timing chain cover on the Magnum and get a cam snout extension there like $35 from Hughes and then you can run a mechanical fuel pump and the motor will have the front end of the older style la so you can run your accessories etc….
The la oil pan will go on the magnum also. Make sure you use the correct pickup for the pan you are using. Easy swap to do.

Don't forget the water pump on the Magnum spins in the opposite direction as the LA.
Mounts are the spool style as on the early 70s-up engines.
Rockers oil through the shafts on the Mags.
Hughes is the place to go for stuff.
That reminds me I need to order a plenum repair kit.
