Hey guys and gals!I just got a 71 Newport Custom 4dr. It has a 496 Stroker with built racing trans. 410 Posi. The motor seems to be detonating when stabbing the throttle at cruising speed(2k rpms). The car came with an 800 cfm edelbrock. Is this enough carb? Could it be a timing problem?

Thanks...I'll give it a shot
If that doesn't help, try running the car at night when it is cooler. Heat could be an issue. You can also add some octane booster to your gas. I don't think your carb is an issue, unless it is tuned wrong and it is leaning out. If you think that could be the case, bump your jets and metering rods up. Good luck with it!

Just curious what your compression ratio is and if you are running aluminum heads.

Shot in the dark, lean cruise condition and lazy vacuum advance needs tightened up to come out of vacuum advance quicker

I run an Edelbrock 800 cfm AFB on my pump gas 520" stroker as it was recommended by the engine builder and it works fine.

Has the fuel line size been upgraded? Are you running a mechanical or an electronic fuel pump? I have a Holley Blue pump mounted by the tank that acts as a pusher to the mechanical fuel pump since I did not upgrade the fuel line size. If a timing change does not help, look at the fuel flow. Just a thought.

Q. Can you run the car with just the mechanical and turn on the big electric when hammering on the car? I want to do this on my Barracuda and have heard conflicting info, I don't like relying on a aftermarket not readily available too big for street driving pump like Holley's blue pump.

Yes you can but I am not sure why you would want to as you never know when you need to accelerate hard to avoid someone doing something stupid. I have the electronic pump hooked up to an on/off switch on the dash.

Thanks for donating to animal shelters. We have a rescue dog and support no-kill shelters and adoptions...

Mainly for low speed stop and go traffic.
