Too bad this car isn't in better shape, if it was I would definitely be interested in it. Originally Ruby Red w/red int., and a white top. I'm not sure that it was an original 413 car though. The car has quite a bit of rust in the floors, looks like the wrong front seats, and the brake booster is missing, among other things.

I would have to agree when it was mentioned that the car did not come with the 413

According to the fender tag it had power brakes, and in the original picture you can see the outline where the booster was bolted up. A 413 was available, but the code on the fender tag was a "99", which according to the fender tag codes that I have is listed as "Standard cid engine 8 cyl. (w/positive crankvent system)", whatever that means.
Had to be a good looking car when it was new.

Usually the code "99" with PCV system was a California car. It was a mandatory option in CA. only and cost $5.15. Not sure if this could be ordered on a non-CA. car but who would want it. My '65 383 Monaco has this same option code and yes it has the PCV system and was bought new in Cali.

That's a nice looking one. Personally I don't care much for the 880 trim they used on the Canadian models, but that's minor compared to the Fury dash on them.

How do you determine what engine it had then ?

Agreed on all 3 counts.

Base V8 was 383 with a 2 barrel

Right, but what would the code be then if it was anything other than a 383 2-bbl., and was a California car ? It would seem to me that there should be a different code for just for the Cali. emissions, or maybe I'm just wishing for too much.:BangHead:

From my understanding that is what engine code "99" means....base engine for that car. My 383 4bl. Cali. car has the "99" under AB on the data plate. Short of the broadcast sheet showing something else I would say 383 2bl. From my understanding "99" engines were considered "special order", I am assuming because they were only intended for Cali.

Your car is a Polara or a Monaco ?
What if you ordered an optional engine in Cali., would you also get the "99" engine code ?

I have a Monaco. Someone with more knowledge may chime in but as I have come to understand......"99" option code is base engine. I can only assume that you could order a different engine in Cali. but it should show a different code as that would not be a base engine at that point. For instance, my '65 Monaco 426 car has code "80" under AB on the data plate(not a Cali. car). If you have the data plate, and it has "99" under AB then you would have to assume the base 383 2bl as the factory engine unless there is conclusive proof refuting that. Also, looking at the pic of your motor, that is not the correct color for '65,all big blocks (383,413,426W)were painted Turquiose. At the minimum your motor was out of the car and if it is a 413(now) may have been swapped. Hope this helps.

In the ad he has a picture of the engine out of the car and painted orange, it is an RB motor, whether or not it's a 413 I couldn't say one way or the other. The car doesn't have many options so if it did come with the base engine that wouldn't surprise me. I guess if you had the broadcast sheet it would be on there what motor came in the car. I don't have any '65 broadcast sheets to even look at to get an idea of what's on them(well, if I do I don't have any idea where they would be). I'm used to 1970 stuff, I've been away from '65's for a long time, like 35 years. I'm trying to figure this stuff out so I know what I'm looking at when I see a car for sale. Thanks for the input.

Last year I researched a '65 300-L Convertible that had the same fender tag code for the engine (indicated as standard engine). It appears that the engine in the car I looked at was the engine associated with the model / trim level. The car definitely had a 413 cu. in. engine, but there was no separate code indicating that.
