65 vs 66 727 trans

My 65 Fury has a rear pump, I can push start it because of that.

The '62-65 Auto's all were aluminum cased units with cable shifts and all had rear pumps. All of these transmissions were very similar. There were some small changes to the oil filtration system, went from a screen to a modern paper filter and some small changes were made to the cable set up. Otherwise they were mostly unchanged thru this time frame. The big block units would all interchange across the various engines as would the units for the slant six and small block engines. Small block and six cylinder units will not bolt up to big blocks and vice versa.

I'll add another 2 cents. The 71 up pump support is desirable but not necessary unless your really pounding the hell out of the car. The larger spline is good but mainly for converter choices. Lock up is a waste of time for gain. OD is great but you have to switch to a GM conversion trans, because I would not put a 518 in anything that did not come stock and they still suck on a good day. Lokar makes a cable actuated kick down set up that works very nice with aftermarket carbs/intakes, set up like the factory kick down cables on trucks and vans. The only shift kit to use is TransGo ~$50 for mild and around $65 for good kit. It will eliminate the no fill in the converter in park and make it shift like you mean it.

Keep it simple..Stick with the original trans but I recommend the following...

Do the part throttle kickdown upgrade.
You can steal it from any junk /6 (from Mid 60's up) or small block 727/904 valve body (71-up) that has it.
It is basically a valve and spring combo added to the valve body.
Get your trans guy to put in the "Hemi" fourth drive clutch band in.
"normal" 727's had 3 clutch bands.

Add the super low first gear set from the A-998 (5TH Ave/Diplomat,Aspen/Volare).
You will not be disappointed with the acceleration from a dead stop.

You can do the 24 spline input shaft to broaden your convertor choices if you desire any upgrade down the road.
Use good quality trans fluid and an external trans cooler piggy back with the radiator.
Use the Lokar kickdown cable as mentioned
Done.
Hope this helps.
