They were available. The Torque flight is listed as optional, as a three speed manual was standard on the Newport then. The dumbest thing I ever did is not buy the 68' New Yorker 440 TNT and four speed I went to look at in 1975. One owner, 40k miles, and $800.00.That was almost two months salary back then.

I have searched high and low for any official factory documentation showing a 4 speed in a 68 Chrysler.
All I see is a 3 speed manual as standard and the TorqueFlite optional.

I understand, but there aren't any records of a CE23L7XXXXXX either,as I checked thoroughly, but I have one anyway.Chrysler said no records exist of the TNT in an Economy model .CL,CM,CH yes.In my 67 and 68 Mopar parts book there is a part number for a four speed transmission in a C2(Chrysler)P2,andD2. I believe if the book shows one available, then they were put in a few cars. I would like to find a better way to record it, but I know what I drove, and the car existed.

I remember for years everyone saying no four door hemi's were made, until a few turned up.
I wanted to add:

I do remember The people I spoke with,(1999) and they said pointedly, no 440 TNT in CE,PE,or DE cars, Except, Police cars. I asked about the four speed option, and they said if the Engine came in the car, every transmission for that size advertised engine was available. They had no records saying sticks were unavailable, So, I looked in my parts book, and a part number existed for a C,P,and D line. That is as far as I could get. This was 1967, but I think it is unlikely Chrysler quit for 68'.

I have seen a 68 Chrysler 300 4-speed manual transmission. Chrysler built them, they do exist.

I used to own a factory, FOUR DOOR, 1967 Fury III 383HP, FOUR SPEED MANUAL. They do exist,...all you had to do was order it.

I've seen 66, 67 Newport four speed cars in hard top and convertible. All you had to do was order it.

..................back on topic.....................the car in question appears to be a 68 383 2bbl, 727 Torqueflight car. It is a very nice car, and would be a hoot to drive!

Someone else can do more research on it for a final answer to originality.

I have spoken to the owner, and she is a nice lady. She states that numerous mopar experts have inspected the car and documentation, and say the car is original. it is actually a base Newport, radio delete painted roof car. I suggested to her to match the SON on the plate to the car, it would sure help. Wierder things have happened.

Award that dealer back in 1968 for The Most Impecable Factory Appearing Customer Request Award ever!!!

A nicely converted automatic car.

Wow, has the original Inland shifter, most of those were replaced with a Hurst back in the day. Factory Tilt wheel and Tach too. Tach must not work, hence the add on one.

A 383 2bbl with a 4 speed that was originally an automatic. With a 440 non hp single snorkel air cleaner. It's most likely the only 68 Chrysler that's a radio delete car. it's been parts swapped over the years.

Chrysler literature for 1967 states that the 440 TNT was available in the Newport, Newport Custom, 300 and the New Yorker, but not the T&C wagon. It also states that with the 440 TNT, a 4spd was available in the 300 only.

As far as the 1968 Passenger Parts catalogue(March 1969 superseded April 1968) I can only find P2 & D2 for the 23 spline A833 (early)#2892049 (late)#3410609 for the 383 and P2 & D2 for the 18 spline A833 #2892047 for the 440. There is a C1 with the 383 for the 3 spd A745 #2538329.
What's the date on your parts catalogue?

1967 Chrysler literature states that the 4 speed was available in the Chrysler lineup but with some limitations, but not for 1968. I'll believe it when I see it.:3gears:
