68 Newport, thinking of donig a vinyl top. Thoughts???

yeah yeah yeah.. I see your answers. I respect them, Honor them but I am still hot on the idea of a white vinyl top..

It will have custom set of Full fender skirts made for it soon, white vinyl top with 57 lancer hub caps.. Kinda that traditional Sled lower rider look is what I am after. Something different than the last 3 guys that have owned it.

OK..... I see where your at..... You wern't looking for opinions. You just wanted us to accept your decision to "improve on Chryslers design". You probable came to the wrong place.... maybe a "lead sled" or "rat rod" site would give you the approvial you need.
Fact is...... It's your car to do with as you please..... Enjoy....

Here's the problem. The car is a '68. The reality is that by 1968, that kind of customizing had ended years earlier. Trying to mimic a certain era look with the wrong era car is too common place now.

At a show, I asked the owner of a car with exhausts down the side of his 70's something if he knew the correct name of them.
He replied Sidepipes. I said they were Lake Pipes and did he know why. He didn't have a clue. He did it because he saw pictures in a magazine...,

If you don't know the heritage, it's going to come out wrong and the next owner is going to have to undo the damage. A few will find it cool now but it wont stand the test of time.

I don't disagree with you. I have owned dozens of 50's and early 60's cars.. I am the first one to point out a chump who shows up in some wannabe ride.. I think Chrysler and other c bodies have a unique look to them . just like the other 68 on hydros, I love that look, it's totally different then every other impala or riveria. But, I can see where you guys prefer the stock look. Maybe I will watch this forum from the bench and chat with other dude's who prefer a more custom look. I do love these cars both stock and custom. But I wanna make mine just a bit different.

Not to sound like a whiner, but some of you act like I am destroying the car. All I am doing is adding a different set of hubcaps, building a second set of full fender skirts, and possibly thinking of a vinyl top. I have all my stock hubcaps, and have the original skirts, (as seen on the car) that can be changed back to stock in minutes. I am doing it this way on purpose so it can go back to stock if I want to change it back or sell some day. The vinyl was a stock option back then and I was thinking of adding. At this point I will most likely just leave it slick. I love these cars both stock and custom. Relax guys, I am not hacking it up. Hell I even did my motor back to stock including the factory air cleaner. I like a clean stock motor look.

My favorite C-bodies are '67-'68 Chryslers, and I prefer the vinyl top... Same goes for the '68-'70 Chargers, but not on much else.

Stepping aside gets you nothing. You asked and didnt get an answer you liked, it happens. Will's post was dead on. Dont not do it because our opinion was different than yours.

The only down side to vinyl tops is that they trap moisture and eventually will create rust. My NYB has a lot of rust under the vinyl and I don't have a choice, the top has to come off and I'm still undecided whether it's going back on or not. I may paint it body color or paint it black and make a 2 tone out of it. Who knows, I may put a new vinyl top on.

Just don't put that crackle paint finish on your NYB that is supposed to fake a vinyl top. This was some sort of fad in the 60s/70s over here, there were even strips to glue on to let it look three piece.

And apart from the different opinions concerning the Vinyl top on the 68 Newport about everyone will conclude that this is the resume from Wills post and that goes for me as well as the others.

Nope.... no crackle paint for me....there's plenty of that on the NYB already. LOL!!!

1. Paint the top body color
2. Paint the top black
3. Put black vinyl back on

I haven't decided yet.......i have until this fall/winter to figure it out.

Either go body color or put the vinyl back on, don't paint it black. My .02.
to the original poster, it is you're car, do what you like. I think you've got some great plans for it and I'm excited to watch what you do and how it turns out.

I do think that I'll paint it body color if I decide to paint it instead of vinyl. That was a factory option I believe.

The Weather has been beautiful here in Oregon the last few days.. Got her polished up and put over 100 miles on her yesterday. She ran perfect with no hicups. Touch up paint arrived in the mail today, and after a quick spot check its a dead match. Gonna touch up the roof, finish a few other small repairs and order some different hub cabs. After this picture I put on the stock Hubcaps and decided to run them for a while..

Car looks great! How much is it lowered, and by what means? BTW, if you're interested in some 50's era moon style hubcaps with the Chrysler script (as pictured in post #19), I might be talked into parting with them.
