My engine of choice. Torquey and they idle like a Lexus and pull very smoothly. No 4 bbl. tuning b.s.

I think different persons have different impressions/feelings about "torquey".
383-2 is slowpar. Even a 383-4 sucks in a C-Body. Way to powerless

Just my 2 cents

A 383-2 would now work for me extremely well.
Years ago, not so much...:eek:ld_school:

How fast is anyone expecting to go in a 5000 lb boat? A 440 is nice, but a 383-2 or a small block will work too.

it does depend on how you use it.

I have 69 300 as a driver. I usually cruise with 80-90mph. It is important to have enough power before you do some passings on the autobahn.

Same belongs to the city. You sometimes need to move fast, therefore power is needed. I have a 69 Sport Fury Cv with L-code 440 HP and a 3,23 sure grip rearend. It moves fast enough at the traffic light and if I want to it can smoke tires, too.

There was a time when tire shreading.... and smoking burnouts were important.... But I got over it.

The best engines i've owned have been the 383's. Dependable, economical, bullet proof.
My 64 300 convertible with 383 2bbl was a dream to drive.... would cruise all day at 80 and a 66 satellite 383 HP & 4 sp supprised a lot of commers.

I also like the 440..... Perfect in a big, heavy C-body.... perhaps even over kill. I owned a new A12, 440 6 bbl Road Runner in 69.... That was just stupid, crazy showoff stuff, (but still cool).

What your driving demands are is the determining factor...... JMO.

Under the hood of a 70/71 polara I have had a 318,340, 360, 383, 400 , and 440. My favorite of those was the 400. It was a stock 1972 hp engine and pulled like there was no tomorrow with a top end that never stopped. The 71 360 is my second favorite, with 150,000 miles it never quite and ALWAYSpulled harder than the 383. From one car to the other you noticed the difference in pulling power and the 383 had a 323 suregrip where the 360 had a 276 pegleg.

Of course the 440 in my current 71 is gaining points in my heart

I could definitely change your mind about a 383-4 in a C body. You must of been down on 1 or 2 cylinders or sucking through a sludgy carter 2bbl with a bread and butter camshaft. Have had 3 of them by now. We threw a rod with the first pulling some IROC-Z along behind us in a 70 Sport Fury...ooh they pull alright....

I agree. But I haven't gotten over the tire shredding and smoking burnouts...LoL.

the engines were defintely fine. Had a couple of them. They were 17 second cars on the quarter mile. 69 "h"-code and a 70 "n"-code. Have to agree with Dave, had a 72 Sport Suburban with 360, it was faster than both 383-4 wagons.
