70 fury in Nj - not mine

I don't recall saying any "L" code anything was weak. I'm just saying more or less the 383-4 or -2 is not the dog everyone seems to want to make it out to be. EVEN in 2bbl form the 383 has enough "grunt" to get a C moving from a cold stop quite nicely....and responds very well to inexpensive performance build ups....and I still don't want a small block in anything larger than e's or a's.

So you've never had a 360?

If you were referring to me...........no. I had a brand new 73 Ralleye Challenger with a 340 Magnum. Best small block I've ever had. It would smack the crap out of any 383 with the performance additions, cam, intake, carb, headers, 1969 2.02 ported heads, Direct Connection blue box ignition, 4.10's, M&H Racemaster's.....it easily beat stock 440's on the 1/4 mile.

I was speaking to Gary ...........

I once pulled a 340 from a 1970 Duster with a 3 speed on the floor. I put that engine in my 1971 polara 4 door sedan. That engine screamed. I liked the engine, I did. After that I got the 1972 400 hp... for 85 bucks and the car it was in, a 1969 Polara 500...

You can't beat M&H, that's what I run at the track. I run Mickeys on the street cuz M&H doesn't make a 20" drag radial.

I was born in 71 but my dad & uncles talked about the 340 cars beating even the Hemi cars cuz the small block cars could hook up better.

You put a 340 in that! God bless you.

No, I pulled the 400 Magnum out of that. I thought it was a 383 ( which it should have been, 400's didnt come out till 72)

I have heard that the 400's didnt come in Orange but mine had Orange under the blue, it was originally Orange.

The 340 went into a 71 polara 4 door sedan...

That car started life as a 318 car, then a 340, 400, 440-6 and a 440-4.

I've seen 340 AND 440 cars whup up on HEMI's.....but that really doesn't say anything b/c the 426 Hemi motor was not originally designed to be a 1/4 mi drag race motor, even its "detuned" street trim. Its natural habitat was on the NASCAR tracks.

You were the quintessential mad scientist there weren't you.

Well, it was good enough to get banned from NASCAR & it rules the drag strip to this day. Not too shabby.

Nope, not at all.

I wish I could have been around to see the HEMI ruling those NASCAR speedways back in the day. And nowadays what with all the aftermarket speed junk the original HEMI head design can be wrapped in its little wonder why it still dominates.......although the FORD people would beg to differ with that.

I think the ford guys are running a pretty similar head (hemispherical) on their race cars. I'm not an engine builder but I think that ALL top fuel cars run a Hemi style head.

Yeah, all copies and variants of the original Chrysler design...the Ford Boss 429 motor was inspired from the Chrysler Hemi. I think they called it the "semi-hemi" motor, lol.....still a dog. woof.
