72 Newport made it home

I have not read everything in the threat but I have a 1972 Newport and my steering is very touchy as well it is normal for these cars mine only has 47,000 miles on it. its the way they where built Chrysler changed it in the next few years so it was not so touchy .

Formals have the same steering problem. My 78 NYB does it too.
 
Has anyone here ever taken the instrument cluster out of one of these? I tried to take out the dash clock and now the speedometer doesn't work. I took all the screws out of the black piece with the lights in it, pulled it off, then tried to pull the part with all the gauges out. It wouldn't come out further than an inch so I didn't force it. I just put it back together and left the clock alone. Well I discovered on a test drive that the speedometer doesn't move now. How do I fix it? I would still like to fix the clock, how do I get it out? My dad said I probably pulled a cable loose.

By the way, the steering was much tighter. It is still loose but much safer. It was hard spending 400 miles trying not to drift into the next lane.

Dad's right about the cable, I'm glad you're addressing the cause of the loose steering.
 
Pulled the plastic end off the cable sleeve.
Do you mean the end that goes into the speedometer? It is pink, and I can't get the ends to connect, I think I may have broken it. That panel is a HUGE pain in the behind to try and get out! Is getting the sleeve there what I need to do? - thank you

It usually comes off the cable sheath and the drive cable inside will not reach anymore
 
Is it safe to adjust the nut that changes the preassure on the bearings in the steering box? I know this would change how much the worm gear moves up and down therefore making the steering less overpowered

By the way for those of you wandering, the steering is mostly fixed. It still isn't perfect, but much better. It kind of wants to go in a straight line, and sometimes slowly shifts to left or slowly shifts to right. The wheel also doesn't return after a turn. It seems to me like the control valve might not be moving as easily as it should. Does that sound right to any of you that know what you are talking about?

Jon, I love looking at her... partially because even if she isn't the one I sold back at the start of the 90's she is a close duplicate. The one I sold was one of the few "flips" I ever pulled off, I did not own it for long and didn't get to drive her too much.

Mine was actually acquired by my parents for some strange and unexplainable reason. When it eventually got to me, it had been beaten down by my mother, who drove it with a leaking transmission and refused to keep it topped off. I don't think a non-numbers matching transmission would be a very good identifier.

If you ever trace the title history, let me know... maybe I can fill in some gaps is it's the same car. The guy I sold to loved the car and was kinda famous for buying them with low miles and keeping them low while giving them the best of everything to keep them looking good and running right.

The history I know is that it was a Pennsylvania car from 2015 to now, before that ot was in ohio. Was there anything about your car that was special/ identifying?
 
I have a few questions.

1. What type of gas should I put in this car? Cheap, mid, or expensive. My Dad tells me that on some cars it makes a difference, on others it doesn't. If this car would run better on better gas than that is what I will use.
2. When I pump gas into the tank, it constantly stops unless I fill it really slow. The pump thinks it is full if I fill it too fast. What could cause this?
3. The steering still doesn't return, any suggestions on what may do this? The steering is almost normal, but not quite right.
4. Pertaining to the possible exhaust leak, I took a look. The bolts were tight, but on the left side of the car the manifold has two screw holes. Should they have a screw in them? Is there something missing that should be screwed into it? I find two random screw holes odd. There is a picture below to show you what I am talking about.

1. If it doesn't ping, cheap.
2. Kicking off the pump could be a vent problem with the tank, if you move the nozzle to a different position will it fill?
3. If the steering doesn't return you may have the box adjusted too tight.
4. The screw holes may be for a heat shield

If you pull the nozzle out a little bit it helps, but you still have to fuel at a snails pace.
