I'm sure you got a great deal on it. How much have you put into it since you bought it btw?
Anybody that has been here since the beginning has seen me sink enough money into it that the 25-hundred dollar entry fee is chump change to what it cost to get it to this point.
And my monetary loss is chump change compared to a whole lot more others here.
We are the real market 99% of the time. That high teens Formal buyer is the other 1%.
And I don't believe one-percenters shouldn't be shafted. Call me Robin Effen Hood.

My guess is something traded in on it. Did they really get 17900 or did they get a car they know they can spit shine and sell well.

That is the point. If you have to put the same amount of bucks into it, similar, or more to have the same or lesser condition car what is the problem with paying teens for a car that is what someone wants and then driving it what is the problem with that? And I"m quite certain you got a very good car to start with for your $2.5K, a better car than a lot of folks.

Not everyone wants to perform or manage a restoration just to get to the same car in the end or not as good a car.

And not everyone treats nice cars as trailer queens.

Bingo. Years ago, I passed on an 8k mi. Salon. It was low teens. I seriously was thinking about it. In the end I passed because I knew I'd keep it in the garage out of fear.

There's the irony.
You buy an 8k mi. car for 14 grand and you're afraid to drive it.
Put $14k into an 80k mi. car to make it like an 8k mi. car and you WANT to drive it.
The odometer distorts everything.

I really, really doubt this car is going to be anywhere close to a daily driver at that price or slightly less. Also, my next guess that a person who would pay that is probably not capable of doing any kind of work on their car. That leaves it to others to maintain.

If I was still looking for that Formal that made me excited, I might get to the point where I would contact Gesswein. I have heard their cars are in nice condition and on any day you decide you must have a 1974 Imperial, they are likely the only folks that have one advertised. I have a theory that the constant advertising is some how connected to a tax scheme for a private collection that occasionally might let one go. It also keeps them legal using a dealer tag to drive them whenever they like and might be a hobby experiment, of someone who has the funding to do such things, to move the market price and have a little segment of the market cornered if it ever works.

If you buy any of these cars and felt you had made your final investment, I am afraid you would be wrong. At the age of these machines, something can and will go wrong sooner or later.

I choose the cars I find and post based on condition vs. price vs. my guess as to if the seller may be willing to negotiate. The 5k cars keep resurfacing unsold as the sellers put them on and off CL or try other avenues... many really don't sell at that price. My latest Formals for sale thread shows there are several out there for 2-3k with some patience and negotiation. I believe in many cases the difference between prices is little more than a clean up job. The 2k PGH white one may resurface, spit shined and marked up if the seller answers somebody's email and actually sells.
Bryan, in my heart, I know that if I needed cash by 9:00 PM tomorrow or I lose my house, the best I should hope for is 25 hundred dollars. But I know that the guy who just paid high teens for that car will never love it more than I love my car.
Buy the way, I'm finally going to reveal what I paid for my car.
Wait for it.
25-hundred dollars.
If that sad day ever came, I would be in Fumbuck county as fast as I could get there... It would finally give me the excuse to buy that red steering wheel I've been watching... Darn thing, it isn't right for my cracked rim blow or it would have been gone already.

tbm you are so missing the point, especially after Stan made my point for me by restating what I'm saying

Your first sentence is pure supposition and opinion, and while asserted strongly that does not make it any more valid or true for anyone but yourself. You are not a mind reader. It would be far wiser financially, to buy this car and drive it or trailer it or hide it in your garage than to spend as much or MORE on a same year and model car and invest lots $ into restoring it to like condition, to do the same things. That is a fact.

Also, my next guess that a person who would pay that is probably not capable of doing any kind of work on their car.

Sentence two. Judgement of others motives and your opinion, asserted strongly, is still an opinion no matter how much FCBO group think may back it up. There is no logic or proof behind it, and it doesn't not hide the fact that it's still no more an valid opinion that saying something like "A person who pays a financially reasonable asking price of an older house that has been fixed up is incapable of doing any work to any house"

That leaves it to others to maintain
.

The last sentence is faulty logic and only has the weak foundation of your first two opinionated sentences for support, which even if correct are irrelevant.

My take is that if this car allegedly sold for the asking price....

1. Someone that watches B-J and doesn't have a clue what Formal's are really worth and thinks he got a steal and he'll get $50k or 6 figures for it in a flip in a few years like a rare Forward Look car.

2. As mentioned before....someone that doesn't own or can operate a 9/16" wrench.

3. As I hope it went down...Someone who really appreciates and knows Formal's and wanted a low mileage, rust free beauty that is completely done and all he'll have to do is maintain....and hopefully enjoys driving it.

4. I hope it doesn't end up hidden in a garage/museum or becomes a trailer queen. All Formal's were built to be driven and enjoyed! Best road car on the planet!

Or someone that knows you can't possibly put a $2500 car into similar condition for less money and has the checkbook to make it happen now.

In 2005 my 2 Door 78 had 8600 miles, today there's over 15000 on it and a pleasure to drive. With a short season here April to Oct and alternating old cars throughout the season it's tough to put a lot of miles on an individual car. I can drive a different one every day for 3 weeks and it won't add much to the odometer. Previous owner and myself preferred to drive it.

Yep......see people buying cars at B-J all the time that don't have a clue.

They aren't buying to flip.

And if I had to have a car I may overpay to get it.

And those guys at the TV auctions are not a fair comparison to the guy at home and pulls the trigger on an eighteen thousand dollar 78 Chrysler.. Not the same breed
