You know... I started to tag you on this because I knew it was discussed a lot on FABO.
That's one of the differences between the two forums. FABO gets into engine building and has that fantastic tech "articles" section that I refer to often.
Lots of small block there for sure. B bodies builds a lot of big blocks but many are for maximum performance and 500 cube strokers. Like anywhere, you need to sift through the threads to find the information you need.
thanks for the replies. I can get stock shims but I'm 30 over and the stock shim was aready borderline with the bore.
I'm afraid a stock shim will hang over. I couldn't see anything in the FSM about service head gaskets or part numbers. The mr gasket ones are huge 4.450 and people say they got some "uneaven coating" on them. cometic brand is .27 thats ok. maybe 4.320 would be ok?
the block was squared up taking about .014 off. not sure what finish it is.
The heads are still waiting. I would imagine they need to be squared up a bit too. I would definatly get them to at least resurface them a couple thou to clean them up.
what finish am I shooting for?

True, but I wonder if the Cometec head gasket listing just has the nominal (stock) size listed and the opening size is large enough for an .030" over bore.
You can see the stock head gasket is obviously larger than the stock bore in @Cartel 's pic to allow for the chamfer that the stock engines have. I'd say a call to Cometec would answer that question.
That is the replacement gasket, so it's aimed at "one size fits all". Any chance you didn't toss the used gasket that was on the engine? That would be the one to measure.
IMHO, the 4.322 is big, but would work. Lay it on the block and see what it looks like.
