Not a C body but my 04 Ram 3500 Cummins has suddenly developed a very delayed upshift from first to second. Anyone had this problem or have any input? I have a call in to my tranny guy but it's Sunday so...

Have you done a fluid and filter change Chris? Truck is 12 years old....

Check and ensure you haven't over filled....if so fluid may foam and create slippage.....overfill in any tranny is bad

Sticky solenoid if I had to guess but it is purely a guess that one is a little newer than I am used to. Let us know need info on these someday.

Wait I take that back its a Cummins Which means 618 you need band adjustments and probably a fluid change, have to pull the pan to adjust low reverse just like a 727.

It's been regularly serviced. Last time was about 4 months and 3000 miles ago. Fluid is clean and at the correct level. I'm hoping it's electrical and hot inter
nal.

Front half of your transmission is hydraulic (servo pistons) and still has bands that need adjusted. Shift points are controlled by a electronic governor not a old weighted one like a 727. You may have to change some parts, solenoids or switches at/in valve body and adjust bands so fluid will have to come out.

My '99 Dodge van just developed the exact same problem today, out of nowhere. It does have 271K on it, though, and I am concerned it may need a rebuild ( In my case, if I keep it in "2", it will not go into 2nd at all). I have read in numerous places that the governor pressure solenoid and switch are known to fail in these units, and replacing them is possible with the pan down but the valve body in place. The TV cable can also be responsible for odd shifting if it is not adjusted properly, or if the return spring has dislodged or is broken. Perhaps you may want to investigate these possibilities before looking elsewhere.

I have zero understanding what you guys are talking about. That big aluminum thing between the engine and the rear end is a mystery box to me.
I'd go to a transmission shop. Maybe get raped. Maybe not.

Dropped it off at my Tranny buddy's. And yes I mean transmission! I should know something tomorrow.

The verdict is in on my trans. The band for 2nd gear snapped open because the retainer dropped into the pan. This could have been repaired without a rebuild, but the fact I have almost 300K on it makes it worth it. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the update. I haven't heard yet on mine. My truck has 240 on but it already had 175 when I bought it so I don't know if it's ever been rebuilt. I just gotta wait for the word on it.

Well turned out mine had the same problem with the band retainer. He replaced it with a titanium retainer and replaced a solenoid & transducer and I got out of there for less than $300. I'm a happy camper again.

I finally got to ask my trans guy about this problem and he said the band retainer is a very common problem with this trans. Glad you both got the problem taken care of.
