Any Transmission Guys Here?

Mine also had a noisy reverse pump when cold (though I always warmed it up before moving it, I knew it was a lurking issue) and some odd noises that would echo from the bell housing once in a great while. I figured if I waited until it failed completely before rebuilding it, I may not get my money out of it. Incidentally, I maintained it very well (proper fluid and filter change every 30K) and drove it carefully, though after it was opened up, I could tell from the design that a regular band adjustment should help keep the band anchor properly seated on the stud. It seems that would make this sort of mishap rather unlikely, unless the anchor should snap (it appears to be made of cast iron). When I have a few nickels to rub together, I might invest in one of those nifty titanium ones just in case. Though I know my $ was well spent, I cannot help but wonder how far that trans would have gone had I elected to repair only what was broken. After getting a look at its innards, it am inclined to believe that the 46RE and its companions can be pretty stout, so long as the weak points are well understood and kept in mind. It is based upon the legendary 727, after all.

My tranny guy said mine hasn't been rebuilt and with 240,000 (half of that has been towing) on it while it looked good and now performs well it's on borrowed time. My wife and I are taking a 7000 mile cross country trip in it this summer so I'm seriously thinking of a rebuild before we leave. He will upgrade and basically make it bulletproof.

I would say your piston sealing rings are getting old and brittle especially with Az. heat. I would lean to rebuild by someone you know/trust rather than the 2 monkeys with whiffle ball bats in the old Aamco transmission commercials that you are likely to deal with on the road.

This guy is really good. He only does these transmissions and due to word of mouth stays really busy. And 70bbd you are right about not wanting to deal with it out on the road. It would be like bend over and grab your ankles sir this is going to hurt a lot!

Wait one freakin minute. I just remembered you were a bus mechanic. Why aren't you rebuilding it. :poke:

Here is the little bastard and his 5 other coils he was part of causing my Peterbilt's clutch problems. The others are stuck in the spring side of the pressure plate and in bell housing, this one and another decided to get between the floater and the rear disc.

I had that happen rolling up to a red light went to knock it out of gear but had waited to long, pushed the pedal and did not release at all, once I hit the key I got it out of gear and stopped. This one was not locking but I could not get it in gear without shutting it off.
The clutch plates on this one are not even half worn, it has never acted right it came with the engine must have been a crappy reman, the new one is new not reman.

I was at US Customs on the north side of Houston clearing a bond and I couldn't get it in to gear. Figured the clutch brake had packed it in. Wrong...

Got to the port and it had miraculously healed itself.

Now not only do I believe in miracles, I depend on them but I knew this would not last. Drove it for another couple of months tho until I just ran out of nerve.

Did away with the auto adjust Solo clutch and put in a new not reman Eaton ez-pedal. I didn't get dirty tho...
