AutoTemp bypass

Last year I by passed the heater hoses around the Auto Temp to the firewall after I noticed a small leak where the hoses went into the unit.
Now that there is no working heat or defroster, is there another way to work around this without having to purchase a new Auto Temp unit?

No. The best way is to use a complete manual AC system out of a donor car and convert the whole system.

I thought there was a company remanufacturing the Auto Temp with a metal base. If I remember correctly, there was a write up on the unit on the Imperial website, saying it was the same unit used in the 72 Mercedes. That was a few years ago, and the going price then was $800.

For 1971 and later Chrysler models, the Autotemp II module from these folks will work, and they work well. I have one in my Imperial, and it works great. 1970 and earlier though, you probably should just change over the system to manual unless you love misery...............

Not sure of current prices but mine didn't cost as much several years ago as you are recalling.

Why aren't we concentrating on fixing the leak before anything else....

After disconnecting the hoses both I saw cracks on both tubes going into the Auto Temp, and I felt because of its age and info I have read on the cracking issues these are prone to have, I just chose to by pass it and live with it. Now I'd want to fix it where I don't have to worry about it.
BTW Steve, thanks for the link! It looks like the price has come down on these considerably.

One hose goes to the vacuum controlled heater valve and then to the heater core and the other hose goes directly to the heater core. The Auto temp unit is totally electrical and vacuum.
I think you are confusing terms.
