Axle shaft flange

My 69 300axle flange is ground down on the axle side. Bearing went bad and I had at least 1.5" end play.
How important is this flange in maintaining end play. This is the left, non adjustable side. Should I start looking for a replacement?

I'll get a picture soon as I get back out there. Another oddity is only one edge is eaten up. It's not longer flush to the axle. The opposite edge is fine.

Wow. I just found a whole repair kit on eBay for $10. Axle flange, gaskets and seals.

May want to look into the possibility of a bent axle too.

Another related question. Does the axle adjustment on the right have anything to do with the left?
Think I'll recheck the right when I'm done.

No adjustment on the left side. Just shove the axle from the right side and then adjust the end play by turning the ring. On my 66, I set it at .018.
