Inner "hard part" of the architecture is the outer edge of the leaf spring.
Outer "hard part" of the architecture is the inner side of the rear quarter panel.
Backspacing ensures that you can use all of the available space, minus a bit for deflection of the leaf spring bushings/shackle bushings in cornering and bumps. Can't forget about fender skirts, either, if equipped.
Filling the wheel well can also mean you either jack the car up to wash the upper part of the tires or roll the car to get to them. From my own observations, the clearance can vary from side to side!
