I have the AT1 system and until I can check everything I hooked a jumper from my HI Auto switch to the blower so I would have some defrost. Wiring got hot.
I put a toggle switch in and hooked directly to 12v and fan. Wiring got hot. Fan is new so do I need a relay or something to run blower for now?

What you are experiencing is normal. This is why some brands use a "high blower relay" to run only the high speed on the blower motor (as GM typically does). On the Chevy Astro vans, they did not do this and we normally sold blower motor switches on those vehicles after they got about three years old. One customer had needed three new blower motor switches as his prior ones had "cooked". Lasting about two years each in TX.

Can you find a connection to use a slightly lower blower speed?

Just some thoughts,
