I bought something on ebay, it was in Florida, being shipped to Michigan. It's apparently being shipped by USPS. Can anyone explain the route the package is taking? It got to within 14 miles of it's destination and then took a thousand mile detour.

You’re not alone.

I’ve got a package that made it to Sioux Falls and was sent back to Kansas City and now coming back here for delivery….

I ordered cigars from a place 42 miles from me, after traveling 326 miles to the post office 200 yards from my house they were sent back to the distributor. Once again they traveled the 326 miles route to get to me. I don't know the return route but it took over a week for delivery.

I don't have it yet. I could have had it in 3 days had it not taken a thousand mile detour. As of last night it's still in Louisiana and they're still saying it's going to be delivered in Michigan today.

And no, it's not a package of mail-in ballots.

USPS Tracking uses predicted and actual tracking sources. As it was explained to me by my local Postmaster, based on route and timing the tracking info will show the predicted "arrival" of a package at a unit, but then it will be physically scanned at a completely different location and that tracking info will be logged making it look like it moved 1000's of miles between scans. Tracking has actually gotten a lot better since the pandemic. Not sure why they still use the predicted scan, since most of the time it is not accurate.

FWIW, the USPS has not been an government run agency since the 1970's and most congressional oversight was shed in the 2000's.

Who operates the USPS then?

I consider them like Amtrak.

Here’s a reference that indicates to me that they are run by the government:

How is the U.S. Postal Service governed and funded?

Yep, regulated by the government, like many other industries, but not run by the government. They are privately funded. I doubt much mail would be delivered if day to day operations were controlled by congress, but that is only my opinion.

Yeah but aren't they considered 'Federal' employees? I seem to remember with my workman's compensation case a decade ago that the 'Postal' workers had a different form of workman compensation than us regular peon's as they were 'Federal' workers.

.

Decades ago I had a west coast UPS package coming down I-10 make a left turn in Jacksonville on it's way here to Daytona Beach FL. I called them up and it got turned around in Raleigh NC. Still made it here in a reasonable time considering the size and it was coming from the west coast. I've had early eBay small computer parts way back when you could use a postal money order for purchases. Timeframe from me mailing the PMO at the local downtown post office to the seller in Oregon to delivery at my door was 5 days. I've gotten small computer parts from China in 10 to 15 days with the Speed Pack option of shipping.
Last small computer part buy from California recently was over a month to get to me mostly because of heel dragging by the seller, 4/5 day to print label and another 5 days to drop the package off with only 5 days in USPS control. Teach me to never buy from a 98% positive seller again, plus the part is well used and partially defective, I just left a NEG with order from a China seller... you'll get it quicker.

Got it, I stand corrected.

I still find the complaining amusing.

I can't say I ever cared what route USPS took to make the delivery as long as I received it.

USPS has never lost a item of mine.

They sell a service, one they used to back. Now they tell you it's approximate, not set in stone. Would you feel the same way with an appliance being delivered whenever the store got around to it? Just an example, but the same principle.

It sucks when you see your package almost to your house, only to travel elsewhere for whatever reason, and potentially delay any progress on a project.

LOL.

Straw man fallacy is the distortion of someone else’s argument to make it easier to attack or refute. Instead of addressing the actual argument of the opponent, one may present a somewhat similar but not equal argument.

Coming up next on Fox and Fear, man calls it outrageous when he discovers USPS has more than one customer.
You don't want to miss this uncovered scandal.

The real issue is packages are needlessly shipped across the country when they could be more effectively handled. Twist it however makes you feel superior, it was just an example. Lighten up Francis.
