Car will not idle

you got some wonky throttle linkage going on there. the yellow marrette connector off the back of the carb tells me a lot about the previous owners lack of knowledge or maybe he just had one of those in his pocket. x 2 on the kickdown. no linkage hookup is a smoked trans.

That is definitely not a factory carb. It is an Edelbrock but you have a lot to straighten out first, as mentioned before get the linkage and choke fixed first, then take it from there.

I have a 66 300 with a 383 4bbl. I will send you some correct pictures tomorrow to help you straighten this out.

The linkage can be hooked up. It moves freely and seems to be intact. I'll do that pronto. The choke is of little concern. I live in a hot climate. I want the car to idle at this point. Otherwise, it runs great. Smooth and powerful, relatively of course. That might mean a replacement or repair.

I don't think it's gonna be that simple...

WTF?
That linkage setup is a mess, if that Kickdown linkage is connected down by the spring there then it is working in reverse, not a good thing, it needs to be up the top with the accelerator cable and gets pulled back as the cable pulls back. It appears to be either a 4bbl Carter AVS carb or an Edelbrock copy of said carb.
Also the exhaust manifold is wrong for that car and is probably why they modified your steering shaft to clear it, that's something else to be fixed, the steering shaft should be directly in line with your steering box. I am sure this thing will be giving you steering problems on the road, I wouldn't trust it.

That kink in the steering column scares the crap out of me. That can snap any second without warning. I wouldn't drive it.

Sweet ride! Me personally, I wouldnt even try with the carb looking like that. It looks like there was lots of neglect going on (and i dont understand whats so hard about ocassionally giving it a squirt of carb cleaner) With that carb, id order a rebuild kit, take it completely apart, clean it, soak it, maybe get a cheap ultrasonic cleaner you can put the parts in, then reassemble with new gaskets and hosenipple plugs and adjust everything.

A new Edelbrock 650 vacuum secondaries electric choke and be done with it.
You have a very hacked setup as it sits.

I agree with Stan, a new carb, maybe even a 625cfm for a 383, plus buy the mopar linkage kit to go with it too, it will save you a lot of headaches.

That will be great. Thank you very much.
As promised here are the pictures of the 383 in my 300. Now for my opinion, this is not a 66 engine, probably early 70's and a 400 at that, check on the drivers side casting number and it will tell you the displacement. Also looking at your picture the valley pan looks way to old to go with that new intake, they probably did not change it. I would do the intake, valley pan and repair the linkages and tune to see what happens. Also those exhaust manifolds are wrong. I sent you pictures showing the right ones so you can straighten out the steering column. Any other questions just ask.

aftermarket carter performance series carb (afb). maybe the base gasket isn't sealing that modern carb to the antique intake correctly. vacuum passages under carb might be overhanging the intake mounting cast for the original carb. hope the car was bought right.

One can never have too many reference pictures. I'll add that to my pile.
